I have the ceremony of moving the late Queen to the cathedral on as I do some chores. I have to say the forming of the honor guard was really impressive. Every step, even the donning of head gear was strictly choreographed. Very impressive.

A Jaguar and a Range Rover. It was good she was a mechanic during WWII!

I finally found something that I do care less about then the dead queen, the Emmy awards! So she is is just above the Emmys and the other Hollywood "hand me an award" shows. The new king is right in there with the award shows in lack of caring from me.

Yea, I agree, she was a great lady. The monarchy in all forms across the globe is a total waste of money and time, and just a way to have more pomp and ceremony. Not my problem, as other countries are free to play dress up and have long silly traditions.

We don't know that. It's a whole 'nother monarchy, now that Charles is in charge!

They will probably fly in to Stansted or Gatwick. Air Force One will fly probably fly into Mildenhall, then take HMX1 to London.

The Queen's procession is impressive. It reminds me of JFKs funeral procession.

It also serves to impress on me the importance of those traditions that bring people together. Whether they are Scottish, Welsh, Irish or English they come together as British.

Totally agree. Sorta brings all the countries and their people together.

But Duke Ellington did the exact same thing in 1959, and without any desire to make money. Or even generating publicity from the incident—which took place in secret, without fanfare or press releases.

In this instance, he created a unique album solely for the pleasure of giving it to Queen Elizabeth. With the help of Billy Strayhorn, he composed The Queen’s Suite, had one record manufactured—and sent it directly to Buckingham Palace, solely intended for Her Majesty’s ears.

According to Ellington’s son Mercer, his father began working on the music to The Queen’s Suite as soon as he got back to his hotel room. He enlisted colleague and collaborator Billy Strayhorn. In addition to royal inspiration, the work also borrowed from the natural world: the opening movement draws on birdsong heard during a Florida visit, another section was a response to an unexpected encounter with “a million lightning bugs” serenaded by a frog. The best known part of the Suite, “The Single Petal of a Rose,” was spurred by a floral display on a piano at a friend’s home.

By early 1959, the finished work was ready for performance. The Queen’s Suite was now a 20-minute work in six movements. The band recorded it over the course of three sessions in February and April 1959. A single golden disc was made, and sent to Buckingham Palace. In order to ensure that no other copies were released, Ellington reimbursed Columbia, his label, some $2,500 in production costs, and thus retained personal ownership of the master tapes.

The original score to The Queen’s Suite is now in the collection of the National Museum of American History. I’m not sure where that single recording is nowadays—but Duke made certain that the music was never released during his lifetime. Not many people even knew about the existence of this recording, which was a kind of secret between him and the Queen. Yet, according to producer Irving Townsend, Ellington worked harder on this music than any other piece during that period.

What was the Queen’s response at the time? We will never know. But I note that as recently as 2019, Her Majesty surprised British jazz musician Gary Crosby by mentioning how much she admired Duke Ellington. And that same year, she made specific reference to The Queen’s Suite in a conversation with saxophonist Tommy Smith.

Finally in 1976, two years after Ellington’s death, the piece appeared on an album entitled The Ellington Suites, released by Norman Granz. A few months later, that record won a Grammy.

She was an amazing figure, and regardless of the argument of monarchy being fair or not, when its inherited status.. I don't think anybody voted in power has ever done a better job at being head of state.
She served with elegance, grace, and brought stability and leadership to her people.
One of the most amazing feats of her courage and resolve was when she was on horseback for Trooping the Colours.. and a man did an attempt on her life, Can't remember if it was real bullets or just blanks, doesn't matter , she didn't know.
Her horse reacted, she sat amazon, but kept it cool as a cuccumber , collected her horse and just kept going.
She did not get ushered out by no secret service, she did not change her plans for the day, she just carried on.
She will be a tough act to follow, and though not my queen, not my country, like that old blanket I have here from my grandma, comforting to have around and I'll miss knowing she's out there as a beacon of stability for Britain and the World.

The official Queue. Apparently this was pre-prepared who knows how long ago. Nobody does this stuff better than the English.

Officials are telling people to be prepared to stand in line for up to 12 hours and there will probably be no time to sit because the line keeps moving.

I've heard the wait is closer to 24-30 hours.

GH85Carrera 09-16-2022 07:15 AM

So how many weeks does it take to bury a dead queen? Will this go on for another month or so?

Only the French can even remotely come close to the pomp and ceremony of the British. I guess after 2,000 years of practice and tradition there is a ceremony for every possible step. Chunk her in the ground already.

GH85Carrera 09-16-2022 08:47 AM

We learned from our former masters about pomp and ceremony. We are just beginners.

svandamme 09-16-2022 09:22 AM

some would say, extremely gifted beginners at it

, hell even just a football match has bigger bands then many smaller nations have parades on their national holiday :D

You care so little but continue to take the time to post about it......interesting.

craigster59 09-17-2022 09:19 PM

To try and bring this back around to a respectful thread, it will be interesting on Monday with the funeral.

My Wife was born in West Germany and follows the Royals and loved Diana. She will be getting up early to watch the procession "Live" as she also will with the crowning of King Charles.

Some love pomp and circumstance and respect. And a bit of courtesy doesn't hurt either.

craigster59 09-17-2022 09:25 PM

And as far as Britain goes, 95% of the country has only known her as The Queen. That is one long reign.

URY914 09-20-2022 07:34 AM

The last sentence of this story....

He has now been reduced to The Royal Dog Caretaker.

"WINDSOR (Reuters) - Queen Elizabeth's black pony Emma watched the monarch's funeral procession pass by in the grounds of Windsor Castle, where it was held on a lead by a groomsman.

The queen's two corgis, Sandy and Muick, were also brought out for the arrival of the coffin at the castle, where Elizabeth was to be buried later in the day following a grand state funeral.

Held on leashes by palace staff, the dogs patiently waited in the forecourt of the castle.

The queen, who died this month aged 96 after 70 years on the throne, had a lifelong love of corgis and horses and enjoyed riding throughout her life. Her second son, Prince Andrew, will now take care of the dogs."
