Somebody's got to wear this. My dad's 97, and has a home health aide that he luckily has the ability to pay for.

Light a fire? Hit it from three sides. Side one is the News. Side two is state Govenor. They say if you go high enough its always one guy. Side three is Joe Biden. Its a Government issue. Put it in Joe's lap and dont give up until something happens. Personally I think Joe will pluck this up but it just might get enough attention to make a difference for this older man. Joe might even throw some dollars at since he is giving away the store lately. Go on a letter writing campaign until the needle moves. No joking here. "All I know is first you've got to get mad, you've got to say I'm a human being God damn it. My life has value. Keep yelling." |

You can make phone calls that go unanswered, compose letters that go unreplied to, call in the local TV for their special "invesitgative reporter", as for me, I'd put my shoes on and show up in person at the County Courthouse. Maybe start with the Board of Supervisors of the County. Maintaining composure is optional. They'll get the message. You might get results.
My County has their own "Meals on Wheels" program where they deliver food to the elderly in the program. At first glance, you'd think well that's nice, they could probably use a good meal, however, it's much more than that. It's an opportunity for a "wellness check" and that's when the opportunity for the dominos to fall can get set in motion. Sometimes for the better. In this instance, I might even take into consideration the value of the property without the trailer on it, and who in the community would like to have the property. |
That movie was based on reality.
-There was a case of one small town social worker exposed for dumping elderly into gov homes, and not notifying relatives, racking up 'service fees', and getting the house and possessions sold for pennies on some unannounced local auction to friends. -In another scenario, a judge got busted for sending delinquent kids to privately-run group homes to rack up huge state fees. -In both cases the determining factors was the direct kickbacks. There is a need for some type of these government services. People without physical or mental abilities living independently can use some help eventually. But the slippery slope for abuse of the system is there waiting unless protocols in law and review are in place. There are huge grey areas in many cases. Some people want to be left alone and die at home. Relatives might not know or might not care. etc. |
