I'm Worth 15 Tons
Reading about Futons and the fact that they can be used for other things....like a sofa....made me think about having "Things"
When I moved up to Las Vegas, the moving company estimated that I had about 17000 pounds of stuff to move plus my cars and the things I would move myself...So all told, I probably have close to 30,000 pounds of poessions... 15 tons of stuff....So in the scheme of things I must be rich.... When I was packing my stuff to move, I kept out only a couple of pots and pans to cook with, I soon realized the double duty most of those items could perform and that I really don't need that All Clad Sauciers pan that cost me $85.00... I guess the point I am getting at is that having things can be a burden....and that I can get along with a lot less stuff than I have. I kinda feel that this is the high water mark of my owning poessions...that over the next few years I will pair down the things I own. The only thing that I havn't fully worked out in my mind is the fact that there are certain things we enjoy doing, or having in life...and since I like to cook maybe having that Sauciers Pan which is like having a tool... is worth having for the enjoyment of being able to use it on occasion. PS: I think the thing I want now are those slips of paper I get at the end of the month....with those numbers followed by a lot of zeros and a decimal place...and to see them increase GREATLY every month. Those only weigh the weigh of a piece of paper, which U can stick in your pocket. |
isn't there's 2000 lbs in a ton??? :D
|
If you're worth 15 tons, you should start one of those religions that (EDIT) weigh (END EDIT) your worth in gold.
I'd get fat for that! |
The Muji chain of shops used to sell booklets on the theme of the more you know the less you need - basically guides on how to use items for purposes they were never designed for. Clever but using table knives and coins in lieu of a screwdriver is just too tragic....
In the last few years I've developed a theory that I don't actually own my possessions - THEY own me! With an obligation to care for them. Consequently I try to avoid buying ephemeral crap. Did I write the above? - Too many pre dinner martinis, too much sangria with the fajitas, too much Irish coffee and then hammer down with tequila slammers on top to keep it all down. |
...15 tons, whadaya get?
...another day older and...oh, never mind.
Tabs, you are not alone. In my neck of the woods, anyway, there has sprung up a glut of "U-Store-It" rental sheds, like one on every corner. Lots and lots of people seem to have so much stuff they've run out of room in their basements and attics, so they have to rent space to store all the stuff they just can't do without. Once a month, the local paper then runs the official public notice of auction of the contents of such-and-such storage unit because the renter has failed to make the payments. Fifteen tons of stuff, eh? I don't know what to make of that... Ed |
For example I own a Lawnmower, a gas power trimmer, a gas blower/vacume...and various other rakes, shovels, and yard maintence tools....I have a smal yard at the moment and can use some of those items..so do I get rid of them and just have a gardner, in the last house I had one... I still will need a shovel to pick up the dog do, or the ironing board, and iron....how do ya get away from stuff like that?
Now I am a collector....which creats more poessions...I used to collect cars thus my interest here...but they take up too much space etc....I am without a doubt going to pair down my collections, keeping the most interesting things....my Porsche is on that list...but U just don't realize how much stuff you have until you move...and I kept way too much stuff that shouda bin ***** canned when I moved. Yeah I am a SLAVE to the stuff I own all 15 tons of it. |
Tabs: if you want to start collecting animation art, I can help you there. Doesn't add too much weight, either. :)
Better hurry though: our last edition sold out in two days. It's like the good old Warner Bros. Studio Store days! |
I collect oil paintings....especially American artists both "Moderne" and "Impressionism".....have a few real good names....but mostly moderately priced stuff. Have a couple of Serigraphs by Evynd Earle...background animator for Disney for Lady and the Tramp and one of the other big Disney movies...??? What surpried me is that animators know who he is and try and copy his work to this day.
BTW ...DD.... I was watching a short on AMC or TCM about the old Max Sennet Keystone Cops one reelers....All the wabbit and Wiley, & daffy were were take offs on those old slapstick comedies. They offered the same kind of entertainment...I just love those old WB cartoon....My cat is named Tuddy as in "I thought I saw a Puddy.........." Of course my favorite is that innocent little yellow bird. |
Oh, man! Yeah, I lot of animation was a take-off of comedy of the times. Parodies were huge at WB in the '30s and '40s. Then in the '50s, when TV came more into play, the humor level dropped off significantly.
Some of the stuff we have, you will NEVER, EVER see on Cartoon Network or any other station. I'm talking about racially sensitive cartoons, subject matter stuff, sex, you name it. If you know, for example WB's "Tortisse Wins By A Hare," directed by the great Bob Clampett, there is a mass "suicide" scene (all comedic, of course), at the end, where three ancillary characters blow their heads off with one shot from an enormous revolver. That's been X'd out completely from any sort of programming. Whomever owns a cel of that scene, is probably sitting on an easy $10K. Hence, your old "Lady and The Tramp" stuff is probably worth a small fortune. The market in animation art is coming back real strong. We went on a cruise about two months ago and decided to check out the art auction onboard. What little OPC animation art they had, (good stuff, mind you. Not this Michael Jordan/Bugs Bunny; Tiger Woods/Taz mock-up crap), was going for BIG BUCKS. There's real knowledgeable people out there, who are sweeping this stuff up. Here's a perspective: 20 yrs. ago at Disneyland, you could walk into one of the Main Street stores and buy an OPC "Snow White" for $10, maybe $20. Now they're worth on average $5K. Price values like that extend to other art markets as well. |
When I lived in So Cal always went down to Abells Auctions on Garfield below Washington....there was/is stuff there that U coulda bought for a song and sometimes more. U just never know whats going to show up?
