Garden Hose

Can anyone recommend a garden hose? The last couple I bought kink when in use, or just rolled up on a hose hanger ( even with a broad base to rest on).

Thanks!

Not sure of the brand but am pretty happy with this one. Yes, it'll kink if you don't unroll it right off of the holder. I think most hoses will kink, especially if left in the sun to warm. The water in this one will almost scald you when you first turn it on from being in the sun, especially on hot days. I think I got this one at Home Depot. It replaced a red rubber Goodyear hose that my wife hated since it would kink easily if not unwound properly. This one is the same way but doesn't seem to do it as easily if it's cold. I have the Goodyear hose in the shed. I also have another one on the reel I use in the front yard for washing cars. I find coiling them up in their natural coil works best. Every hose I've ever used has a natural coil to it, some are just harder to get into it than others.

I've been tempted to adapt an air hose for water. I suspect that will provide enough volume for most jobs.

Recently bought a 75' "Swan" by Gilmour "soft and supple". 5/8". With a few uses, it kinks less. Very sturdy and well made brass fittings. I'd say mid price range...made in USA.

Anyway, ask & you shall receive...good video testing the various types, telling you what to look for:

I have over an acre of lawn...so I sometimes need at least 200 ft of hose.
Last year, I switched to a pair of these in series. Work great and super easy to drag back. They don't kink either.
Bought them at Menards.

I've been running the red versions of those for many years. They can kink, but are less likely to kink than the average green hose.

I generally go to whatever hardware store is closest and buy the best hose that they have. It's usually some sort of "commercial" hose made of natural rubber and with premium brass ends. I've gone with red at the new house and used red in the old house too. They work well and last. I think they are usually marked "kink-resistant".

That probably just means that they are "vanilla" until you get a few drinks in them.

I've had a 100' 7/16" polyurethane hose for a few years now. The best part is that it all fits on the sidewinder reel I have in the garage. The flow is somewhat reduced, but it's fine for most things.

I have several of the hose in the photo, and they are generally good. The premium hose Shaun referenced is excellent and priced such.
I have those "expandlable" hoses as well and the pressure loss is great enough that they barely will turn an impact sprinkler.

The really good hose is at Grainger. It's called wash down hose or something like that. Made for all day use, cleaning up food processing machinery or warehouse floor. I buy it in 100' length 3/4" diameter and it's expensive as Hell but worth it. I think Sani-Lav makes it.

I forgot to mention - while you're at it get some Eley quick disconnect couplers. They make the best hose reel also. I have one with wheels that will hold 200' of 3/4" hose, which is really heavy.

Lots of interesting stuff in this thread.

Baz's post would also be a great resource.

Lat time I bought hoses about 5 years ago, I tried to be done with the cheap crap and bought several made in USA premium hoses from the hopless despot. They are good year and continental I think.

5 houston summers have just about done them in though. They dont leak but are looking and feeling about done.

I have a bunch of really expensive AN 10 puslock hose leftover from a project may try to turn it into a hose

I use 200 ft of the expandable hose and don't notice any loss of pressure. The latest generation of these have seemed to fix that problem.
I can wind the whole 200 ft onto my suncast hose reel with no effort. With that length of normal hose...it was a chore. (and it wouldn't fit)

I second the Eley hose reels. I have two of them and they are awesome.

Buy once, cry once.

The truth is you have to pay for a quality hose. Fourteen years ago I bought a few hoses at Walmart. They had the usual selection, and also had some that were noticeably more expensive 9may6be three times) and just looked and felt like some sort of black rubber. I decided to spring for the extra cost and have been using them ever since. I've gotten several different hoses from H.D., Lowes, & Costco over the years too as additional hoses. They've all died, but the old black ones I paid extra for from Walmart are still looking and performing great, and are very kink resistant.

Since we’ve always had irrigation systems I haven’t had to worry about setting up a garden hose and sprinkler. I have bought nice hoses that wouldn’t kink but nowadays, I use a soft almost cloth like hose for washing the car, rinsing off things etc. it’s lightweight and does well.
