Cooler weather...must be aware of these
They can easily jump to clear a car, but sometimes they misjudge.

On Tuesday last I missed hitting a BLACK BEAR at 45 MPH by inches! Fortunately, the wimpy little beep of a horn in the Samurai scared the beast enough to cause him to hesitate as I swerved into the oncoming lane.
Because this happened within a mile of my house, I started looking around the yard as I mowed and lo and behold! two piles of bear scat! |

^^^I had a close call with Momma Bear and two cubs on Sunday. Sort of remote single track on my Dirtbike. Couldn’t stop thinking about getting mauled until I was nicely away.
Back to the deer. Brake, don’t swerve. A swerve and loss of control almost killed me and some buddies years ago. |

I swerved. Saved my life. But it was controlled by virtue of my autocross experience.

We have deer here, and I see them on the side of the road occasionally. I'm rarely out driving after dark, at least now when it gets dark late.
It is cooler. Our morning temps have been 72-75º, but this morning we were 59º. Woo hoo!

Had I hit that BEAR there is no question all three of us would have been totaled, me the BEAR and Samurai.
I threaded the needle one time when a flock of deer decided to loiter on the highway at night. They weren't standing still but rather calmly walking across the road. I chose my spot, floored it and braced for impact. There was no deer in the headlights look. It was panicked deer in the side-windows look. I pulled over, shaking, and rested my hands on my two kids' sleeping heads and cried. |

Crow on
Good for you in the autocross skills! My buddy who crashed us was sorely lacking skills and we lucked out with only a broken neck- from which another buddy recovered. Deer scare the crap out of me. I always look around with high caution in suspect areas when it is getting darkish. |

When you see a deer anywhere near the road stop the car.
Lots of times people are driving by and admiring the pretty deer in the ditch. As you drive by, boom, they jump onto the road.

Now that that's out of the way, your second story felt like something out of Days of Thunder (except for the kids and crying - totally understandable)

That one that jumped over the car has some serious skills.

They aren't all that good or lucky. I've seen another video recently where one car follows another car down the road right about the time that a mob of deer crosses the road, and one lands on the trunk of the car in the lead. I think another runs into the side of the car or something.

When the rut is on, the deer are like the old PJ O'Rourke quote around here: "It's like giving whiskey and cars keys to teenage boys."
I slow way down n the wooded sections of the road ![]()

Deer are thick here, and unlike decades ago are on the move 24x7x365... I see 'em all the time (and on cams). I've never seen a black bear here, but they have been spotted and are not unheard of anymore. All the critters here have changed their locations and habits in recent decades.
I had two run right across the road in front of my F150 about 5 years ago.... at 60 mph, I just puckered ![]() Loud pipes save deer ![]() |
