MS Outlook Experts?

Hey, my email provider migrated to Microsoft 365.

I(we) can access email on our phones and on Outlook online BUT the Outlook Desktop App can't install it.

Our provider gave up and blames Microsoft, I have not been able to get a good response from MS (they want $$$ for a consultation).

Thoughts?

I use Outlook for my back-up email on my laptop.
Just go to outlook.com and there is a choice for login or create free email.

I have the free version...which is what it's worth.
The 'focused' email and reg email is confusing.

I am far from an expert on the email.

I have a Mac, but the MS should be the same.

Assuming Outlook is on your machine, from the menu bar on top: Tools, Account, Add account and work from there.

If I can do, the 100 Monkey's with typewriters have finished their novel:cool:

What does this mean?

I think it means you have the Outlook Desktop App installed but you can't add the new account to it?

This is something that pisses me off about MSFT.

Outlook is both an app AND a service and they have nothing to do with each other.

Outlook, the email service, is the old Hotmail rebranded and is not really a great choice as it has a high delivery failure rate due to it being attractive to spammers.

Outlook app is an email client that works with any email service and does not require the Outlook service.

OP is talking about the app.

I do O365 a lot.
Recently had this same problem done
Old version of Office was not removed cleanly. Used a MA removal tool.
What step of the process fails, download, install or activation/SignIn? Or program will not start after install?

ErVikingo 09-26-2022 01:42 PM

I use the app. The problem is when I "add account" Outlook returns the following message:

"Something went wrong and Outlook couldn't set up your account"

The account is now an " Exchange" account.

My app is updated as of last week, it runs GMail and icloud accounts without a hitch.

Program runs, it just wont add the account. Manually or otherwise. Account works as i can access it on iPhone and Online.

I tried creating a new profile and just using that account. Same problem.

This is the problem with "Outlook" being a service and an app.

Office 365 is not Outlook the email service. It's actually Exchange.

When you first try to add the account to the Outlook app you should be able to simply type in the email address and autodiscovery should do the rest.

If autodiscovery does not work that generally means your provider has not set the proper TXT records in DNS.

If you are running Advanced setup then you should be choosing either the Microsoft 365 option or the Exhange option.

Are you getting those options?

ErVikingo 09-26-2022 02:15 PM

Stomach!

I get those options and none works. I have also tried IMAP.

DNS tests OK and GoDaddy says it works properly.

What gives?

Oh god is this Office365 through godaddy?

The first thing I tell people is if you think you have an account issue try using Cloud Outlook and if you are sending and receiving fine there it's almost certainly a local issue and you've confirmed it worked there.

Do you have another PC on hand that has never seen the email account in question where you can install Outlook and try.

I suspect a local profile / cache issue.

Did you remove the old non 365 account from your Outlook app?

Assuming Win10 look here,

c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outloo k\profile name.

Move the profile somewhere else like your desktop.

Try adding again.

ErVikingo 09-26-2022 02:37 PM

Yup GoDaddy migrated their email service....

Removed the account BUT when I go to add account it comes up on the radio button

Win 10

moving the profile. I'll report shortly

Do you have any firewall restrictions in place? If you sign in to outlook online does it work?

techman1 09-27-2022 06:26 AM

Could you verify the desktop app version?

Connection on earlier versions have been dropped, and 2016 is said to work, but I recall a Microsoft tech update some versions of 2016 would have difficulty. There is an article about updating Office 2016.

Just the Windows Defender (if that qualifies as a firewall) and AVG virus.

Outlook online works as does iPhone mail

Techman,

I am running version: 2208 (Build 15601.20148 Click-to-Run) Current Channel

(whatever all that means)

techman1 09-27-2022 07:52 AM

When you attempt to add the Office 365 account, does the error also happen when you try to add it as a "Exchange" account?

I think you said it did, which means I am out of ides, except to remove and reinstall the app.
