Will It Run? 1972 Mercury Marquise

https://youtu.be/i53hUIRDd_I

My brother-in-law recently purchased a 1972 Lincoln Continental Town Car. I drove the car the day after he got it home and it brought back a lot of memories of driving my Mother's 1973 Lincoln Mark IV.
The car in this video is similar to the Lincoln only the Lincoln has way more luxury features. Funny story. He couldn't obtain a rental car and had to end up renting a U-haul truck when he and friend drove to South Carolina where the car was located, bought the car, turned in the truck and drove the car home. The car is absolutely huge and feels like you're driving a living room but I think it's cool!!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e0608e15d1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8c974a063c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...48afb98a69.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...4d8326bfea.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...64e5ae5975.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d5fc13aa39.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...40330e8a25.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...baab566e82.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5f41672fe2.jpg

Clearly a base model. No opera windows? And the continental kit? Extra points for the padded vinyl top though.

As much as I laughed at cars like this when they were new, today I'm glad to see them being kept alive.

A quarter acre of car. I love it.

the big bench seat is awesome.

Nice land yacht 😁 . Probably a 460 V8 ............ a real fuel mizer 😋 . It may weigh more than modern pickup truck .

Base model?
The 1972 Town Car didn't have "opera windows". The Town Car also was not the model with the hump on the trunk lid, that would be the Mark series.

Yep, big old honkin 460 V8 which is exactly what my Mom's 1973 Mark IV had. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6d6eeacab2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fee423d9f3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c13a18fc86.jpg

Dad had a string of Mercurys in the 60/70s.... had a Marquis BRAUGHN in the mix and the car I drove in '76.... a '70 Cougar (351 CI... hoot ;)).... He insisted on a Lincoln Mark V in '78 as that was the last year of the big 460 too :D.

He has been known to drive a Prius a few decades later...

Thanks! .... enjoy yer land yacht :)

Someone took a lot of care with that thing...the interior looks perfect. The pedals look like new.
How many miles?

I sure could use some more pics of that engine bay. I have a customer with a 78 Town Car and folks have fiddled with the various hoses trying to defeat smog.

Is this car near you, Marty? Would your brother be able to take a few pics with the air cleaner off to guide me and help get a few things back to where they should be?

Not critical right now but down the road a little bit.

The 78 is 19.4 feet long. They are cool and turn heads. Fun to drive if sorted.

The Lincoln has five drive belts and a 165hp 400 but the top of the engine is very similar

Hey, yes the car is about 5 minutes away from me. I will see about getting some pics for you. Let me know exactly what you want pics of and I will get them.

91,643 when I took this picture a couple of weeks ago. My Brother-in-law has been driving the car around town a bit and has been to a couple of Cars and Coffee events so it has a few more miles on her now.
She was taken care of that's for sure. That is orginal paint and she has a cover in that massive trunk. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7e626510a5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...677d6a4807.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9d04f361f4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fc31722550.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...be532a3efb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...707203d253.jpg

The XO of my first fleet squadron had had one of those.

When fleeted up to be CO, all the JO's in the squadron, with his wife's permission, stole the car and had it painted like a Navy Frigate, complete with the landing area on the trunk, Haze Grey with a number on the side...the Change of Command was in the hangar and we drove it in during the ceremony.

I looked but could not find the pics of the car...it was awesome and he loved it.

That's a great story, I'd love to see the photos. :)

The interior in the featured car is beautiful, the leather seats were really nice in those years. I have photos of one that I was looking at up by our cabin in 2020, I'll try to dig them up.

If that car were mine, and I wanted to customize it a little, I'd remove those chrome door edge strips and the horizontal chrome door ding strip, lower the whole thing front and rear, not much, maybe an inch and a half in front, 2 or 2 and a half in the back and spend some time finding the perfect wheel and tire combination. (I think those wheel arches could swallow an 18 inch wheel nicely)

Then, a simple, subtle two color pinstripe (using the colors of the top and interior) the length of the car on the horizontal body line.

that was when men were men and cars were cars

Didn't Frank Cannon drive the Lincoln version of this thing?
