Happy Gopher Dance!

been doing battle for about 3 weeks with this guy who was digging under my AC pavement driveway and finally I got to dance.

Biggest gopher I've ever trapped here. his head was like 2x as big as any I've seen. Old dude, long ass teeth, a grey snout, and a draggin sack that prolly kept his tail off the ground.

I remember snaring tons of these as a kid, just put the noose around the hole and wait for them to pop up. Used the wait forever 😃

Many years back....my lawn was infested with gophers. Every time going outside, I would see 5 or more disappear down into their tunnels.

I tried the gallon jug of water method and caught all of them in one season.

Never heard of that one. Please explain.

Many videos on youtube...this is an older one.
The only part that the guy doesn't explain...you must spot one going into it's hole. If you just pick a hole...it'll most likely be empty.

Works every time.

Some say gophers have more than one exit to their tunnels.....I've never seen that.

If you decide to try the “propane” technique, please film it and be sure to share…..[emoji6]

^^^ I have never considered that.
A simple gallon jug of water works.

juanbenae 10-05-2022 02:02 PM

if you look closely at the photo the water jug would not work due to the tunnel being horizonal. Have seen that technique and video previously. another video has the guy's german shepard going after the thing and the dog ends up being afraid of it...

I have one of those, called the gophernator. Used it on ground squirrels and gophers in our orchard. I'll see if I still have a video of me using it.

Injects propane and oxygen in measured amounts, ignite it and there's a loud boom. Earth blows up along the tunnels and collapses back in on it self. I think the company that made it is no longer in business, they were up in Idaho IIRC.

I'm not allowed to use it around here anymore. :D

this trap is instant, they don't even know it happened... would a "heart trap" help the suffering im working thru from your take above?

Im gunna be dealing with its tunneling under my AC pavement for years to come. I'll know where his tunnels are exactly when I'm crack sealing my driveway the next couple years...

Glue traps and gopher gassers are fool's gold, so glove up so they don't smell you on the trap. get on your knees, open up the tunnel some with a garden spade, set that trap and hope for the best. fishing for mammals!

I cannot express enough that your scent on the trap will doom you.

My problem is I might blow up some part of the tunnel in my neighbors back yard. I love that video.

Once my outdoor cat grabbed a gopher right in front of me.
Wire a leash on your trap, lost a trap when a snake pull a trap back into the tunnel with the dead gopher.
I spray the trap with wd40 and handle it with gloves to leave less scent.

More of sport with these rats and dogs.

Sorry you were shocked and apparently offended. I'm a bit of an animal rights person and I don't hunt, fish or eat meat. But that doesn't keep me from utilizing leather. And if something is damaging my property or health, I'm gonna kill it.

If I don't get that rat, a hawk or cat might. What's worse? Neither.

From a certain point of view, death by trap is probably kinder to the critter. Cats and hawks don't know/care about "feelings". When a predator catches prey, they don't think "I'd better kill this thing as quickly as possible with as little mental anguish to my food as possible." WHen I was younger I had cats, including one that was an outside cat that killed lots of stuff. It occasionally brought home birds that were mangled but not dead (still making noise and twitching). I've seen birds of prey catch food and start pulling it apart and eating it while it was still alive.

I once watched a juvenile bald eagle swoop down on a mallard duck, snatch the duck out of the water and then stand on it on the shore. The duck was mostly immobilized, but not dead and still moving (the eagle had a serious hold on it, so it wasn't moving much). After 5-10 mins of standing there, the eagle flew off with the duck which was still moving the one dangling wing around.

there is currently a bald eagle around my property, and where there is one there are likely two nesting this time of year. worried about my cat, but she won't come in unless she feels like it.

I'd always known that they were big, but since I'd always seen them from a distance, I didn't really get just how big they are. Seeing that one in person from 15-20' away on my mom's back porch was impressive. And the duck that it grabbed wasn't a small bird.

Gophers here seem to have several tunnels to escape to/into. One of the best things I've found to work is one of those garden hose manifolds with four outlets that screw onto a garden hose. I put various length of hose on one and put them down four different holes and turn the water on. Lots of times I get a water logged gopher to pop up from another hole. I make short work of them with a shovel or similar.

i did a search for it to share and could not find a video i saw years ago of an eagle, not a bald eagle but a large bird taking a cat. it was in the burbs as there was a cyclone fence the battle went on against and a guy doing play by play of the battle.
