For a good amount of time, I restored old homes for folks that have a few bucks to spend. Only occasionally someone is a stickler about finish details. By that I mean, measure the thickness of the casing. I was asked to have it milled to 7/8" instead of off the shelf 3/4" flat casing for a Greene and Greene. After the quote, they made that decision quick. Its also a lot more money to restore a home then a car. We can make almost anything our of our shop as long as its wood but I tell 'em, it always cheaper to buy then have us fab up the part. Sometimes there's no choice but to do it. I think the key words here is the train eye. Once you noticed the incorrect part like a bumper on a 356, it becomes a real eye sore.
