Checked off a bucket list item last night
To see The Moth Radio Hour in person.
Website: The Moth I listen to The Moth either Saturday and/or Sunday every weekend. The stories are always amazing and to be able to see a Moth show live has been something I've been wanting to do for years. It was even better than I thought it would be. At the Wilbur Theater in Boston, a very intimate setting. Somehow got front row seats. Storytellers were: Nancy French who told a story about her getting engaged after 3 weeks of meeting someone at 20 yo, moving to NYC and getting David Lee Roth's old phone number in their new apartment, and the subsequent female "fans" who were calling. Jacoby Cochran who told a story about this family's roller skating rink. Mike Massimino who was an astronaut and told a story about his first trip on the Space Shuttle. This was moving. Richard Wescott who (guessing) well into his 70s (he may have been early 80s) went blind and how he got through it. Sybil Hampton told her story about being in the second class of of African American students entering high school in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1959. And the reunion in 1982. These very brief descriptions don't come close to describing the emotion and passion and depth of each storyteller and their stories. By the descriptions above they could be just average stories. But what makes The Moth so unique is that each story was completely different from my description, but that's what the stories were about. But they were about so so much more. Each one choked up and or cried a little while on stage. Extremely moving to be part of their lives if only for 10 minutes at a time. Can't recommend seeing a live Moth performance enough. I will go to NYC and around New England to hear more if I can. I'd never heard of it. Looks like the Massimino story is at the bottom of this page
https://themoth.org/education/stories I'll give it a listen in a bit. |
I have listened to some of the shows. I think the story tellers go thru a series of competitions to get on the final show. I always thought it would be interesting to hear the first telling of their story.

I have a buddy that produces a similar show in Portland. It’s fantastic. Love storytelling.

There have been some great stories over the years. I'm going to try to find a few. This one I've always loved.
And that wind just blew all the death off of us <iframe width="1280" height="853" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/N-i5ADmdO4E" title="The Moth Presents Mike DeStefano: Franny's Last Ride" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

So I'm looking forward to listening to that version to see if it's the same, especially when he sees his kids. That was the best part last night and it was hard for him to get through it. |

This guy is a NYC cop. He has a ton of GREAT stories, and he's a natural. One of my favorites, over 10 years old now. <iframe width="1280" height="960" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/e2VNPBD1mfM" title="The Moth Presents Steve Osborne: Mug Shot" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Sad to hear that he passed back in 2011 at 44. |
Went again last night. 5 stories, 3 younger people and 2 older people. By far the older people had significantly better stories. One was a once East German woman who swam down and across the Danube 3km with her parents when she was 14 to escape to Yugoslavia and other about a black woman who rose to sergeant in the police force.
Positing that overcoming adversity creates character which translates into the character of a nation, I am a little concerned about the future of our country. Of course there are so many other things to consider but it's one piece of the puzzle in our continued decline as a nation. |
Loved listening to the moth on long drives

I remember when this thread came up before. Interesting stuff.
But I didn't remember the thread from its title, so when I read it's title, this immediately popped into my head, and it made me chuckle. https://steemitimages.com/DQmcbCW1mr...two_chicks.gif Sorry, as you were. |
My cousin was involved producing the Moth for a bit, she later was involved with Freakonomics...
She has two Emmys so far so I think she has a bit of talent and is doing something right |
