It ran, but it wasn't happy about it. [emoji23]

Cleaned up the Toro, put it all back together and she runs!!!! She fired up on the first pull, knocked and puffed out some blue smoke for about a second and then purred away. I shut it off and one pull, started right up, no knock, no smoke, I did it a third time, one pull, fired up and ran smooth and strong, awesome!!! So, I guess I fixed it after all. Good job. I wouldn't have thought that a key shift could alter the engine timing that much. However, it sounds like the flywheel advanced with inertia when the blade stopped. That would advance the timing and you had ignition knock. Good thing you didn't run it long. Bad things happen to pistons. I have a drawer full of kart racing motor pistons showing various damages.
That having been said, I suppose that motor is modern enough to not have points and condenser. I don't see any. It would have run if it had. They don't open using the flywheel. |

Thanks guys. I pulled the mower out today just to double check it after sitting all night and day, been raining here and I've been working on another mower, a Yard Machine. Anyhoo, I wanted to see if it was all good so I pulled the Toro out of the storage building and it fired up on the first pull and absolutely no knock and no smoke, this mower runs fantastic and now I am confident that it will be a good one. Now I will raise the deck up so I don't hit any more roots. [emoji846][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]
