Great vehicle that gets poor MPG (16-17). We have an 1997 series 80 that just moved to AZ from WA. Drives like a tank, solid without any rattles, super comfortable, great visibilty. At 287K miles it is catching up with our '04 4Runner, each is going to outlive me I think. At least I don't have to worry about buying a new car any time soon. The styling is so stodgy its cool, gets nearly as many thumbs up as the 911 and 928. Wife named it "Elsie" (L.C.)

Buy an unmolested one and you'll enjoy it.

There are so many YouTube’s about the LC’s legendary reliability that prices may not drop as much as I’m hoping.

There were no SUV's back then. It was Land Rover, Jeep Wagoneer or Landcruisers. Even MiniVans were a new thing. I needed something with 4WD for the winter and room enough for 2 kids. Turns out we had 3 kids.

It has 150K miles and sleeps most days in the garage. I've seen them go on BaT for $60K. I can't imagine what an original owner LC would go for. Doesn't matter. I bought an extra large burial plot for me and the truck!

I don't understand the 'new' land cruisers at all. tall but poor clearance, big gas engine and heavy, and strangely small inside.

When I needed a bigger high clearance vehicle the diesel 60 was a great fit. Is slow but simple and get reasonable mileage (22mpg):

We tried to find one when searching for sons first car. I've done the front pan on a longhood in my garage but the search for these taught me more than i ever wanted to know about rust.

The 4.7 is a wonderful engine btw.

I have a ‘21 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition, knew it would be the last of its kind and work with Toyota so got a great deal on it. Have 15,xxx miles on it and it has done everything I have asked of it with ease.

They got stupid expensive for a while but seem to be settling down.

We had two LX’s. Both excellent utility and winter vehicles. Only downside is gas mileage.

I spent some time on BAT looking at the Series 100's and Series 80's prices. Interesting and surprising, even given the BAT premium.

I honestly think the prices or these things will re-enter the atmosphere in a few years.

I paid $10K for mine with 115K on the ODO over three years ago. Completely stock, triple-locked, one owner. It now has just over 150K.

While I do really enjoy the LC, and plan on keeping it, they do have some downsides beyond the gas mileage issue...even the Series 100 is going to need age related attention.

I am very lucky in that I sold my MB 560 for cash and trade with a friend of mine that know LC's and owns his own shop. The 560 was for his wife and she was delighted.

He knew exactly what to look for and we spent a few quality days together.

I owned his Brother, separated at birth! Mine had 225k on the clock, 0-60 mph in a three day weekend.

I still think the FJ60-62 is the best looking of all TLC's, even better than the FJ40-45's.

There was an original owner FJ62 with 12k miles on a local lot last year for $97k. Sold in two weeks.

There's a really nice one on BaT right now. Last bid with one day to go was $33K.

Funny story. I picked up a big load of tile from the Depot once. As I was coming down a hill approaching my left hand turn, I noticed I was going too fast. Jammed on the brakes and actually locked all four wheels up, leaving rubber on the road.

That was a first!

I almost did. I was about to sign the papers and then it hit me how much I was spending for a car - I think arounf $28K with options, which was real money to me in 1988. I was still a LT.

I backed off and bought a Ford Bronco II for about half the price of the LC. I was still single and while the cars were not even in the same orbit, I really wasn't sure what I wanted to do next and had no debt at all and wanted to keep it that way.

Of course, I get married within two years, have kids, sell the Bronco for a bigger car four years later and have kicked myself over my choice for years.

A FJ60 with a sublime Lexus LS400 engine would be the perfect family car for me 😎

I had put mine up for sale for $12k, no bites. I lived in Frazier Park at the time and saw Marv Spector who owned Specter Auto Parts (the Guru) at the local Ace Hardware.

He offered me $6k for it, wanted to splice the front end and install a diesel conversion like he had done for his FJ60. He told me he could pull the Grapevine from Bakersfield to LA at 70-80 mph no problem.

Told Marv "no" and gave it to my Brother. Fucher still hasn't told me what he did with it.

If you don't need quite that much space, would like to pick up three-to-four miles per gallon and still want comfort, amazing reliability and the ability to go pretty much anywhere non-rock crawlers go, have a look at the GX470.

Mine is right around 240K miles and my son's is about 10K behind. Leather and interior bits (switch-gear etc) were obviously well-sourced, as the way they look and work belies the number of miles and years they've been around.

Although a lot of people have discovered what these are (ROW = Land Cruisers) there's still the occasional owner/seller who hasn't done his or her homework and will list their truck at a very attractive price. Move quick, though, or you'll miss it. My son got his from the original owner when it had about 160K on it. It was priced many thousands of dollars less than what the market would likely have allowed. First guy there with cash was my son, who considered negotiating for a nano-second, then thought better of it and handed over the cash. His truck, dinged up here and there from off-road use, is still worth way more than he paid for it.

I’m having a difficult time convincing wifey that we need a Land Cruiser. Above is her GX470. It’s a 2008 with only 59k miles and it’s pristine. I can’t put 33’s and chop off the running boards on that thing. It’s just too nice to mod and take off road. I need a high mileage LC and I’m going to sulk until I get one. Or until she withholds. I’m weak that way.

Hey T, anyone in your club riding an old Xterra? Those are the cheapest 4wds I can find. Might have to settle for one.

My stock 93 will fly over the Grapevine from the desert at 75 without with gas pedal only 3/4 way. Must get it out of overdrive. I had an 95 that was beaten to pulp out in the desert but still ran relatively well. Oh yeah they sucked gas. My 93 has been over western US and Canada with my family, rein and snow. A young woman in her BMW with her phone killed it. Saved me and my little boy, not a scratch on us but a couple of bruises.
