Labs .... when do they get cold?

So it's 28 degrees outside and my Lab is still jumping into the pond like it's a warm summer day :). I recall a long gone Lab who would just go lie down on the ice at 20 degrees ..... happy as a Slider at Steve's place enjoying the nip in the air.

Brrr.... I am not a Lab!

Dogs are amazing.

One of my co-workers had a husky. In one snow storm, the dog went out into the snow, and made on the ground in the snow, and just lay there getting covered in snow. The neighbors came over and were upset she "made her dog" sleep outside. She showed them that he did not want to come in, and he loved the snow. He hated the summer heat.

Our black and tan male dachshund is the opposite. He gets cold in the house from the AC. He will go outside on a 100 degree day, lay on the concrete against the brick house, in full sun and roast. He will finally come in panting, and smiling and I swear he would say ahhhh if he could. He hates the winter cold.

Mine used to melt a hole in the snow by napping in it.

I has a black lab that was trained for duck and goose hunting and I was often amazed at the enthusiasm that dog had for jumping into cold swampy water. A friend had a Newfoundland that was the same way - it was a hoot watching that big (but gentle) dog enthusiastically jumping into and swimming in literally icy water. There are plenty of on-line references that explain how the dog's coat, skin and physiology are adapted for this.

By contrast, my parents has a short haired dachshund and she hated to get her belly in contact with snow. Watching her technique for running in deep snow (porpoising up & down) was quite funny.

Seriously, my lab's enthusiasm sometimes outweighed his common (?) sense. After he got out of the water in sub-freezing temperatures, I found that it wasn't a bad idea to towel him off so the water didn't freeze on his coat.

One more example: I had a neighbor with 2 Husky's and in weather well below freezing those dogs liked nothing more than to lay on the front porch concrete.

Back when I was a kid, probably 12 or so, my brother and I went rabbit hunting with my uncle. He had two basset hounds that loved to rabbit hunt. We were walking around a pond that had a layer of ice on it, and one of the dogs just took a short cut by swimming across the pond. I was worried about the dog freezing to death as any wet human would in those conditions. I asked my uncle if the dog would be OK, and he called the dogs over. Both of them were warm and dry and and loving being outside. I was amazed.

^^ 'cause they have a double coat, like my Rough Collie. It protects them.

I imagine when a researcher carries out any given endothermic reaction.

My lab-rott mix rarely got cold. Loved playing in the snow.

I took my pup to the snow once. I had to shovel a spot and carry him against his will for a pee. He's made up of 12 different breeds. Lab is not one of them

Although they are the nicest dog one could have, be careful as they can be as dumb as a brick not realizing they are cold. 28 degrees isn't that cold.

My family had three samoyeds when I was growing up. Every year come spring time all three would pile up on the last patches of snow. Now those dogs loved winter.

I saw people with them down in Texas, though, that's just cruel.

Our German shepherd/Australian shepherd mix will go outside and lay on the frost covered grass . The past few mornings here have been mid 20's Luke just trots outside with no cares in the world 😁

When do they get cold?

Soon as they stop breathing.

My first Lab went on a walk with me next to a raging, flooding river in December.

I wasn't paying attention, and he swam to the other side for kicks. I was absolutely freaked that he would drown, as this river is known for killing people (Sandy River, East of Portland).

He swam back to me. Ran around. And crossed two more times.

What a knucklehead.

KFC911 11-18-2022 11:05 AM

They may be knuckleheads ... but theyze some smart knuckleheads :).

Moka has instincts, athleticism, and a nose that's like a bloodhound.... bred for decades with a purpose and it shows!

The yellow one I referenced earlier was uncanny smart too.... but very laid back by comparison.....

I heart Labs :)

My parents and I were camping at Wellsley Island state park in NY . Our black lab Susan decided to chase/swim after a sea gull across the St. Lawrence!!! She ended up exhausted on the Canadian side !!! We picked her up in our little 12 ' boat and brought her back to camp . She slept under the camper for a full day 😋

I have had quite a few diff dogs in my life. Labs are great dogs.
But my favorite dog breed is the English Springer Spaniel. A perfect family dog.
