This is a good documentary on Netflix "Don't Stop Believin'". It covers the rise of the Philippine singer from Youtube to Journey. There's a period in the film where they show the extent of the cover bands in the Philippines and the talent that exits there.

Brit Floyd is amazing. Best "Great Gig in the Sky" ever.

Cover bands can fill the void when it's no longer possible to see the originals perform live. If you'd enjoy hearing the music of Pink Floyd played in concert, you won't be disappointed by Brit Floyd.

I enjoy a good cover.

Speaking of cover's, I really like this one:

[prince being an attention whore/]

I saw an interview with Dhani Harrison
about that show.
He said he was basically being a buffer
between prince and the others on stage
as they did not care for the showboating
and "showing off" by prince.
It went against what they were all about.
So basically, Clapton and others were "not amused".

To this day, one of the best concerts I've been to was Creedance Clearwater Revisited about 10 years ago. OK, not technically a 'cover band' because there were 1 or 2 of the original members still there, but wow. Combination of the small outdoor venue with an elevated Vietnam-war Huey over the stage, the perfect quantity of alcohol, good friends, perfect weather and the 15-minute version of Suzy Q.

I should qualify what I meant by "cover bands" earlier.....

I was referring to the bands that pretend to be the original band for the whole show and play nothing but that bands songs note for note, and even try to look like and imitate the originals on stage.... and there is still nothing wrong with that.... It's just not my thing.

Bands that cover a variety of artists' songs while doing it "their own way" can be awesome too..... and I can dig it :)....

I've seen thousands of shows like that .... and anybody who covers Chuck Berry is cool as a snake.

LOL .... Cause they all ask for my aporoval too :D.

It's all good if ya like it....

Jerry Douglas covering Jimi on dobro .... It doesn't get any better than that :)!

As you probably know, they cover Chicago and EWF...they'll never get the voices but it so much fun to watch the musicianship.

Exactly. The very best shows I've ever had the privilege to see were ones in which the band used their material as a mere framework from which to improvise and jam. Take a three minute radio spot release and turn it into a fifteen or twenty minute improvisation. And do it differently, and/or with different songs in their set, on different nights, depending on how they and their audience feel. That's where the magic happens.

KFC911 11-21-2022 01:34 PM

^^^^ Yep .... Jambands :)....

While I love Steely Dan, I would not enjoy a whole show of the awesome musicians posted above.... I just wouldn't.

Different strokes.....

Leonid & Friends is the most awesome Rabbit Hole I have fallen into in a long time. Plus their Singer Ksenia Buzina is absolutely the most beautiful and talented woman in the world. Those eyes and voice go right to the soul!

How about guitarist Sophie Lloyd?

Seahawk, I think I have played everyone of their covers. All good, some better than others. My issue is I think Chicago really did not make another good album after CTA. Here is a EWF cover that is quite good

And a cover of one of my favorite bands, Tower of Power

And then this is this worldwide, in my view, absolutely spectacular covers of many great songs, Playing for Change. There are a bunch of them. I cannot imagine the trick in putting these musicians together

I am a big fan of Leonid and Friends and Foxes and Fossils. We saw Leonid last year and they really had a great live show. I have seen a few Beatles tribute bands that were fun but no one would mistake them for the original band, just a fun night out filled with great songs.

When seeing an original band on the retro tour I really appreciate when they step out of the tight box and let the songs breathe rather than doing a carbon copy of the original recorded track. I don't want perfection, I want a musical connection. Surprise me!
