Too fat to fly

or just too violent?

Qatar Airways tells plus-size model to upgrade to first class because she didn't fit in economy seat: report Qatar Airways said Brazilian influencer was aggressive and did not have proper COVID-related documentation

Qatar Airways is responding after a plus-size model said she was not allowed to board a flight because she was too "fat" to fit in an economy seat.

Juliana Nehme reportedly claimed that the airline had told her to shell out about $3,000 to upgrade to first class and would not refund her the $947 she had spent on the flight from Beirut, Lebanon, to Doha, Qatar.

She shared her experience in Instagram videos that each have more than 60,000 likes, with commenters calling out Qatar Airways and asking them to take action.

"I bought a return ticket to Brazil through Qatar and arriving at the time to check in, a Qatar flight attendant called my mother while another staffer was finishing our check in and told her I wasn’t welcome to board because I’m fat," she said, according to News.com.au.

She told her followers that she had missed her connecting flight to São Paulo due to the incident, claiming that she had had no issues boarding an Air France flight previously and that she had been threatened when attempting to take a video.

Qatar Airways told FOX Business on Saturday that Nehme, who News.com.au said was 38, had been extremely aggressive with staff members and that security had to be called over twice to calm her down.

They said she had been scaring both workers and passengers who had been checking in.

Qatar Airways treats all passengers with respect and dignity and in line with industry practices and similar to most airlines, anyone who impedes upon the space of a fellow traveler and cannot secure their seatbelt or lower their armrests may be required to purchase an additional seat both as a safety precaution and for the comfort and safety of all passengers," the airline said in an emailed statement. "The passenger in question at Beirut Airport was initially extremely rude and aggressive to check-in staff when one of her traveling party did not produce required PCR documentation for entry to Brazil."

"As a result, airport security was requested to intervene as staff and passengers were extremely concerned with her behavior," it concluded.

Qatar Airways said Nehme was rebooked on a flight from Lebanon.
Seems like the rude and crude rotund caused herself a ton of trouble when the airline grounded her.
I bet there is one VERY HAPPY camper who was originally scheduled to sit next to her!

I saw the picture of her. Phew. If I sat next to her I don't think I'd be able to breath. Let alone the aspect of broken bones from her spilling over onto me.

this woman shouldn't be influencing ANYONE unless it's a "don't be like me" sort of thing.

Morbidly obese people are just like other people, they can be fine people, smart, stupid, azzholes, etc....

99.9% of morbidly obese people have some psychological issue (not a glandular issue) that is causing them to eat too much (and likely poorly) that is making them morbidly obese. The number of folks that have medical reasons that they are huge is really small. Fat and Sexy? No. And yes, there are folks that like big people, just like there are folks that like feet or just about anything else that you can imagine (and a bunch of stuff that you can't imagine).

But yeah, at that size, you should have to buy multiple coach seats or some other wider seat.

I can't imagine that she'd have been comfortable in a coach seat. She must have flown there so where did she sit on that flight?

Coming home from an AOG somewhere in Central America, I had to make a stop in Houston, or Dallas. In Texas at any rate. I was on the left hand side of a 737, three seats, and I was in the middle seat. And, lo and behold, this chick's big brother is coming down the aisle, in the coach cabin. He had to waddle sideways to fit down the aisle. I couldn't believe the flight crew even let him into coach.

And yes, sure as hell, he stops at my row, checking his ticket. He had the window seat to my left. I stand up, get out into the aisle to let him in, and the first thing he does is flip up the arm rest separating our seats. I saw it coming, of course, and was able to quickly put the arm rest back down and get seated before he could position himself. Boy did he ever raise a ruckus...

I didn't even acknowledge him. I looked at the flight attendant and very firmly, very politely asserted my right to my seat, as delineated by the arm rest. She made him stay in his seat, which meant he had his left butt cheek up in the window for the next six hours, all the way to Seattle.

This was the only time in all of my flying that this directly affected me, but I sure did see a lot of it. Much of it was not resolved nearly as well, with the normal sized passenger involved winding up on the losing end. Airlines could do a better job. They should worry less about these peoples' feelings and more about flight safety and comfort for their more disciplined passengers. People like this should not even be allowed on board, posing as they do a safety risk to others in the event of the need to evacuate.

Someone should have yelled "Half price at KFC!" and she would have left the plane running.

It seems so simple to me...if you don't fit in the economy seat, you have to buy an extra seat next to you. As long as it's applied uniformly, I don't see the problem wrt discrimination?

Probably because you are a pragmatist. Forcing one person to buy two seats would have the SJWs up in arms.

I'm pretty sure that what's more important for planes/flying than "how many bodies are on board" is "how much weight am I hauling." The pilot, plane, physics, doesn't care if it's a bunch of anorexics or fat people or 1000 chihuahuas or stacks of gold bars. All that matters is "how much is it and is it appropriately distributed throughout the plane." So, it's not like we're really paying for 1 person to fly. We're paying for an average person to fly. If you are so far out of average that you're an outlier (you're the equivalent of 3-5 average people) then you need to pay more. Where that breaks down is with tiny people like kids and babies, because the plane also has limitations on how people can be distributed based on the seats. And planes are happy to make a little extra on a baby to make up for the big folks that they get stuck with.

Many years ago when flying between Florida and Japan, we landed in Denver. I think we were on a 747. We taxied a long time. We taxied over freeways which was unusual. The pilot came on and said something like, "you may have noticed that we've been taxiing for a while. The flight is very full of people and luggage and a full load of fuel, so we are going to the end of the longest runway to ensure we've got enough space to get enough speed to be able to take off." My mom was about ready to volunteer to lighten the load, LOL. I think I was 10 and thought it was pretty cool.

Years ago I remember being on a smaller commuter jet that wasn't full, and the FAs were moving folks to different seats for weight distribution, balance, etc.

"Excuse me m'am.... can you move half of yer fat azz to that other aisle"?

I don't understand why airlines aren't just collectively adopting a scale policy.

When you check in: you, and your luggage step onto the scale
And the target allowable weight is set at , say 120 kg

Normals can take normal luggage,
Skinnies can take more luggage
Fatties can't take any luggage , or have to pay for more weight
Super fatties gotta pay more, but can get the extra seat for free or nominal fee(but must declare that while booking)
People with babies , Also equally trated.. again same system , get extra seat if you order it up front.

100% non discriminatory
And no more impacting fellow passengers with the sweaty body parts hanging over the arm rest.

Nobody can argue anymore
Not about luggage weight
not about room on the plane
No more trying to get oversize carry on luggage on the plane
No more wearing extra layers of clothing to reduce luggage weight

Total Weight , Totally Fair
AND much safer for air plane, since they know much closer what their Gross will be.. no more guessing
