IF You Could...Would You Buy A Convincing 300SL Gullwing Replica?

Came across this lovely replica. It's built on the chassis of an '86 W124 E-Class, so more modern brakes, suspension and engine, it even has working AC but it is an auto (sadly). The body moulds were made from the body of an original 300SL Gullwing to ensure accuracy, while the panels were made of aluminum reinforced with fiberglass and steel, apparently, it's difficult to tell it from an original (wen the hood is closed), so I'm told. Would you jump on it or too much of a poseur? I believe it was for sale for $350k [img[https://www.gullwingmotorcars.com/galleria_images/4746/4746_p6_l.jpg[/img]

Me? Not even if money is no object. It sure looks cool. Auto is a complete buzzkill on this. It reminds me of a very nice version of the MGTD replicas based on a VW. Just something cute and not inspirational to drive. Now a hot rod version??? Oh yeah. I would totally love something like that. Have always thought a D type hot rod would be the bomb.

I guess if I had a third of a million dollars to spend on a replica toy, I might, after scratching every single automotive itch I could think of. Like LWJ said, the missing third pedal erases a lot of the lust, but this could definitely be fun on long cross country trips. And why not just go ahead and build the Uhlenhaut version if you're building a replica?

Great looking car, but I could never….something about a replica just doesn’t sit right with me, no matter how good it is.

This car, I don't see it. A 718 Boxster-based McLaren F1 for a lot less would be something to consider. McLaren F1 Replica Based On Porsche Boxster Is A Decent Effort

So mechanically it's an old Merc worth very little but because the shape resembles a very expensive gull wing its value is 350k? A fake gullwing is fake. M110 engine family is a DOHC (double overhead cam) crossflow cylinder head design with 2 valves per cylinder straight-6 automobile engine made by Mercedes-Benz in the 1970s and 1980s. Power output of .922: 118 kW (160 PS; 158 hp) at 5500 rpm. Last edited by ted; 12-03-2022 at 07:32 AM..

My one uncle had one in his garage once long, long ago (late 50's maybe). It was someone's daily driver I guess. It made an impression for sure. Also someone's ratty speedster was in once. My brother and I used to visit his garage on our bikes to check out the nudie calendars in his parts room, ha! And no I wouldn't want a replica, it would always be a replica.

Apparently, my perspective is different from everyone's so far. Sure, I agree the asking price is ridiculous and the car is not worth anywhere near that figure. But AC Cobras and 356 Speedsters are popular 'fake' cars that look very cool, and I wonder if the Gullwing is treated differently in your minds compared to those other replicas. I think all three cars are cool, and it's perfectly okay for folks to honor them with replicas.

Not for that price. I bought a Beck Spyder for $35K and loved it. So I have no problem with a replica. If it's fun and you enjoy it, who cares if it's real or not? The gullwing and an Aston Martin DB5 are two replicas I would buy if I could afford it.

The only replica Gullwing I would be interested in is this one to hang on my wall. | ||

Just saw this an hour ago in Beverly Hills. The Gullwing is a little out of scale but the 911 is so good that I had to walk up to it to tell that it wasn’t real. | ||
