I wouldn't ever spend $350K on a car. But even if I could, I would spend it on something else. I'm not against replicas. I dig the Superformance Cobras and GT40s. I like the Beck Spyders and 904s. But partially because their performance is on par (or better) than the originals. This Gullwing replica has a garbage motor instead of the original 300HP 8-cylinder. Might as well have just made it.out of some C5 'Vette chassis. At least it would have decent HP. |
I'm in the "No" camp for a simple reason: you can get an SLS (the company-approved replica) for the same money. :-)
If I were going for a high-end replica, it's going to be one from those guys doing the Ferrari 250GT using less-loved vintage Ferraris (you get 99% of the experience for 50% off) or one of those 964-based Carrera RS reps. |
Don't see the point in replicating vintage cars that are not significantly better than the original yet on the surface look so close as to effectively be indistinguishable. The tech to accomplish that design and construction has never been more accessible but talent to choose and accomplish it is shrinking.

Why not start with an AMG GT, then customize the body? Probably cheaper than $350k.

Back in the late 80s there was a company here in the south bay of LA that was manufacturing these replicas and I think this is one of them. I remember visiting the company as I was a 21 year old gear head and fascinated by how they were making these beautiful replicas based on a boring MB platform. Truly hand crafted in the tradition of LA hot rods. They were certainly not in the same league as the guys in the UK that make perfect C-Type Jag replicas or the amazing New Zealand craftsmen that build the Ferraris. Maybe this replica was $35K and not $350K?

This:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1670275625.jpg Into this: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1670275647.jpg Gets you this instead, for $350K: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1670275682.jpg Which is about a third of the price of the original, if you can get one. If you have a load of cash, are old and getting older, and have to think twice before buying green bananas, then it makes sense. A lot of sense. For the rest of us, we probably will never have to pain over that decision. |
I would take the factory replica for ~$200k over that piece of junk all day long and 8 ways from Sunday. I think that the car in the OP must have an extra zero added on by mistake…it’s a $3000 car with a fiberglass body??
Here is the factory tribute, an absolutely beautiful retro design, IMO: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2011-mercedes-benz-sls-amg-28/ |
i imagine i'm a saudi oil sheik. i own a gullwing. now one of bimbo mistresses wants to drive it. i tell her no, but she won't shut up. i buy her a fake one to stop the nagging.

I sold this to a fellow Pelican in 2006. The first picture is how it was raced, SCCA, obviously the roof was cut off:(

That’s gorgeous, I love a red interior in a silver car.

$80K tops. If I'm buying a replica I'd rather get a Cobra...
