I've been told some parts are difficult to impossible to find.

A few minor mods can really wake the 240's up. And still room in the back for shopping trips.

Normal tune up and maintenance parts are as easy to get as any car on the road. Not sure what parts someone was referring to?

I reached out to my former service manager at a Volvo dealer. He said "a lot of them," but couldn't recall many specifics. I became aware of this when I had a 1999 S70 a few years ago (I didn't get bit). He recalled the engine wiring harness fails on a lot of them and there is no new ones. Also the tail light assembly printed circuit boards.
I'd suggest talking to shops that work on 240s before taking the plunge.

I drove those for years. 350k is a lot of miles. Tell him to get a corolla.

In general parts are pretty easy to find on those, but I do also say that from the perspective of the owner of an '80s Saab, which has significantly less parts availability.

All tune up parts including gaskets and seals are instantly available through aftermarket OEM brands as well as all brake and suspension parts including brake hoses, pads, rotors, etc..
Which parts are hard to get? ![]()

I've owned quite a few of them, as recently as 2 years ago. As with any older car, I would never advise someone to buy one in poor or worn-out condition but they are absolutely bullet-proof and most just need maintenance items. Some need everything on that menu, if they were owned by stupid hippies or someone else too cheap to maintain them.
Still, almost impossible to kill. They are a non-interference engine, so broken timing belts are a big nothing...you simply put on a new one and off you go for another 100k miles or until it breaks. The engines are made out of Swedish steel that I swear makes other engine material look like oatmeal. They are low-powered and nothing ever gets stressed much. A woman in my building drives a 740. turbo wagon that is 30+ years old as a DD with zero issues in Los Angeles. I am very bullish on old Volvos as appliance cars. Newer ones are a different story.
