Need a socket?

Youtube of a garage sale find...go to the 10 minutes mark. 270 bucks for a huge batch of USA made Craftsman sockets. Gawd...how many hours of making sets to sell on ebay?

Food for thought for those looking for a side hustle..

One time I was changing my E30 M3 to Euro spec dog-leg gear box and diff. At some point I couldn't find my 13mm socket. Borrowed another to finish the job.

Some months later in just the right light, I leaned over looking at something at rear of engine and there was my socket stuck to one of the bell housing bolts at the top of the housing so it couldn't be seen from underneath. Still have it 20ish years later.

I've found tools in engine bays. Once or twice they were mine that I hadn't previously been able to find. Another couple of times they were cars that I'd bought and some previous owner/mechanic's tools. Never anything good though.

I did once, many years ago, find a broken SnapOn 1/2" drive ratchet in a parking lot. It had a broken tooth on the gear. I waited to see a SO truck at the gas station across the street and ran it over. The guy replaced the gear and it was good to go.

What will happen to the sockets in the opening pic? Probably this: But before doing that, I'd make sure my sockets were as complete as I wanted.

Good winter progect. My brother is a mechanic and he finds tools all the time. usually crap. one time hew found a snap on ratchet worth around 300 bucks. He told the guy and turns out my neighbor is his buddy and was the last guy to work on it. If he had known that he wouldnt have returned it lol. He takes really bad care of his tools. Leaves his snap-ons laying out on his tractor in rusty water and such. But he is always on the lookout for loose snap-ons cheap and eventually gets the whole set and suddenly its worth alot. but he keeps them all anyway

Here's my Craftsman score from a few years back. Still have most it, sold a few of the sets and recouped more than what I spent ($170). Kept all of the sockets, the tool box and the ratchets. Might set it all up for my son once he's a little older.

Still my best estate sale score to date.

That was a fun revisit...Crazy days, tool wise. No more USA made Craftsman, so the old stuff has become more sought after. Good you kept that box...the "craftman" boxes sold new today are chinese made out of thinner gauge steel.

I have an SK metric set of sockets from the 70's
The 10mm socket is still there after 50 years of use.

That's a great find and he'll make back his investment many times over but dang that's going to be a lot of hours.

Boy Howdy! Can't imagine the amount of time just to sort them by drive size, fastener size, number of points, shallow, deep, and mid. Then to decide on how to compose "sets" to put on ebay. He bought himself a job...
