A shot timer sounds fun.

I’m reading that one big difference between ISSF and Bullseye is time. With ISSF, I think you get 3 seconds to take a slow fire shot. With Bullseye I think you get far, far more time.

Yes something like that. I get rostered on at the pistol club to run the competitions. The turning target faces the shooter for three seconds then turns away, and it's three sets of five shots. the other stuff is 5 shots in five minutes or something silly like that.

As a kid we had a NRA range not far from home and I spent a lot of time there on paper targets with a single shot 22. After a while my brothers and I entered the monthly tournament shooting and had some fun with that. These experiences shaped habits that I shoot with today. As we got older we did some skeet shooting with a 100 year old 12GA goose gun that was my grandfather's.

Fast forward to today and I like to hit the range monthly to kill paper and keep my skills reasonably sharp. Over Thanksgiving weekend we had family in town and the boys and one teenage gal went to the indoor range. A .50 BMG was available to rent on the 100yd range so we decided to punch a dozen big holes in paper. Whew, that thing is violent when it goes off! In slo mo video you can see the shock wave ripple down the shooters back. Not something I want to shoot every day but once in a while it is pretty wild.

I think I’d like the ISSF format better. I’m not that patient. What happens in a Bullseye match if one competitor decides to take the full 10 minutes for his 10 shots - you’re just standing there waiting, trying to maintain your zen, like a monk in a traffic jam?

I looked up the hit zone size for ISSF pistol. It is 12.96 cm (5.20”) diameter for rapidfire (5 shots in 4 sec), 8.45 cm (3.32”) diam for slowfire (3 sec for 1 shot) at 25 meters (82 feet). Converting to the NRA 50 ft pistol slowfire (B2) target, 5.20” at 86 ft is roughly equivalent to the 7 ring at 50 ft and 3.32” at 86 ft is equivalent to between the 9 and 8 rings at 50 ft. So maybe I will make the appropriate size targets try timed shooting.

I’m trying to join a local pistol club that is very active in Bullseye pistol. It’s a thing where you join then and casually shoot a bit, chat a bit, fill out an application, they decide whether to consider you, then they give you a panel interview, take you to the line and formally watch you shoot, then there are some voodoo rites and if the chicken feather lands the right way you get invited to join. So far I appear to have stalled at the casual shoot/chat stage. :-(

Actually one guy fairly much does do that

PITA and I can see the shooters from the other ranges starting to eat the BBQ lunch we have, knowing the food may be gone by the time this guy has reached his state of zen for the next shot.

I always say at the start when you have finished your shots put the chamber safety flag in the gun and step back from the firing line so I know you have finished.

Yeah, one of the many things that "endeared" me to bullseye. Ten minutes? Really? And yes, there was always some control freak who seemed to enjoy using all of it, just because he could. Never the best shooter, by the way.

I learned from shooting Schuetzen competition that there is a limit to how long one can hold steady. There are two basic classes of competition in Schuetzen, bench rest and offhand, with scope or iron sights. I never shot the bench rest, preferring the off hand. What a fun challenge - single shot rifles, cast bullets, fired at either 40 rods or, because of modern range layouts, more often at 200 yards, using the German 25 ring target.

The 25 ring is 1.50" in diameter, with each ring increasing by 1.50" dia as they get bigger. Top competitors score in the 220's for ten shots, so they are shooting 6" groups, off hand, at 200 yards. Tough game...

How much does it cost to throw a dozen Browning slugs 100 yards?

jyl 12-17-2022 08:12 PM

Jeff, do you find there is an optimum length of time to hold on target before you shoot?

jyl 12-17-2022 08:23 PM

I found this site

https://www.bullseyepistol.com/chapter1.htm

Lot of stuff to absorb, that I have never considered, about pistol target shooting.

I'd need the Hubble to even see that at 200 yards.

I think any longer than three or four seconds gets to be counterproductive, at least for me. If I don't break the shot in that length of time, I'll lower the gun, take a few breaths, maybe shake out my arms, and start over.

I've been looking at Winchester 52's lately. There are some that can be a bit pricey and I need to do a little more research regarding the differences in models and years before I figure out what I want.

I might even wait until I'm out of Calif before pulling the trigger (pun intended).

There is a book about the 52's...started in the mid 20's...came in Sporter and Tgt versions with various barrel weight.. Three different engineering changes 52, 52B with Speed Lock, 52C and finally 52D..

Remington 37 is/was a good alternative..made 30's and 40's..there is quite a bit of interest in these..

Anschutz 54 and 64...West German.. the stocks on the 54's are fragile...and are prone to crack..especially in shipping.

Springfield Mdl 1922...M1 and M2 versions...ceased production in the 40's. The reason why Springfield Arsenal stopped making Match Target version apx 6 made...is that the MDl 1922 was as accurate.

Then you can get into the SS's
...BSA Martini is affordable..Win 85, Stevens, Ballard..Remington RB...
