Anybody have a piece of food go down the wrong pipe?

Edit. I may have had a small piece of pizza go down the wrong pipe, but it turns out the coughing and feeling bad is because of Covid. I tested twice on Sunday and both came back positive. : (

I was eating a slice of pizza Thursday night and a small piece went into my windpipe or lower. I can breathe fine, but I’ve been trying to cough it up with no results. I am getting thick phlegm and yellow phlegm. Too much coughing gives me a bad headache.

Since I can breathe OK, will this resolve on its own?

Edit: I had something similar happened about 10 years ago and it developed into a mild case of pneumonia. That wasn’t fun…

I get toast crumbs down mine often....but usually can cough them out after 5 or 10 minutes of coughing.
If it's bigger than crumbs and won't come out...I would go to in to see the doc.

I had a fish bone snag once..but that was in my lower throat. Doc used a long bent needle nose pliers to pull it out.

If it travels from your lungs to your butt you have a problem 😋 . Do you have a walk in clinic you can call for advice ? Or telenurse or similar ? Maybe even local drugstore. I am suggesting those only because your doctor's office may be closed due to holiday .

Is it possible to maybe exercise to the point of breathing hard enough to expel it?

Had the same fish bone thing as SteveJ. My wife went in with tweezers. Crazy. Similar symptoms to 930rocket. Just couldn’t stop coughing. Oh boy. Watch out for those fish tacos.

There are a couple of doc in the boxes within a few miles of my house. If push comes to shove, I can always run up to one of them.

Edit: if I wanted to see my regular doctor, it would be three months before they could fit me in.

I've laid down on the bed on my stomach with my chest over the side and my head down a few times while I've tried to cough up something. The inverted position seemed to help some times.

Now there's a visual. :D

Aspiration pneumonia occurs when food or liquid is breathed into the airways or lungs, instead of being swallowed. It happens. If you have weak lungs it can be trouble. Not trying to scare you but that's what killed my father. He beat stage 3 lung cancer and live for another 20 years but near the end he was too weak to cough that up from his lung. You aren't that old and in good health. Good luck, you should be OK.

Found these on You Tube......good luck, Rocket!!!

Thanks, Baz. I saw the guy in the blue Hawaiian shirt video Friday morning and I’ve tried it several times but no results. Side note: It became really difficult to do when our daughters golden retriever ran over to me, because he must have thought I was choking I guess. He started licking me all over the face! Bad timing, good doggy!😂

Right now, I just feel blah, with a headache. Sort of like a flu. And I’ve been meaning to get my flu shot.

Might be worth a trip to the clinic sooner rather than later. Even if they can’t help expel it (vacuum it out), they might give you an antibiotic to reduce risk of infection until it resolves itself.

Any update? Hope you hocked up a good pepperoni lugi and are feeling better!

A930Rocket 12-25-2022 02:39 PM

Thanks for asking, Choc. I feel better than yesterday, but it feels like a little bit of flu. I don’t know whether I got it from my coworker or if it’s the pepperoni pizza?😂

I’m taking a day by day to decide if I need to go to a urgent care or not. I see my regular doctor Wednesday morning…

For ****s and giggles, I took two Covid tests.

They both came back positive.😂

That might explain it…
