Looking for some recommdations, suggestions.
New Age looks decent, I like what a2jon did... Quote:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1673894163.png Want to get about 132"-156" wide, 24"deep with the workbench in the middle. I have two heavy duty metal cabinets that could be stacked and stand on the right side. And don't even mention Snapon or Matco. Yikes, pricey. Thinking $2k-2.5k...or less. |
I used Klëarvūe cabinets from Menards in my garage. My setup was probably around $2,000.

That looks nice.
When I bought my first house, one absolute prerequisite non negotiable item was a garage. I ended up buying my house and the previous owner build a workbench from solid 2 inch thick wood top, and 4x4 posts. Drawers and a cabinet. It is not some perfect piece of furniture, it is a garage workbench I have had my stuff in since 1981. I moved it to my wife's house when I got married, and again when we bought our current house. I added on a bit to it here for space for my bench press drill, and a place to keep the mini beer refrigerator. It is not the best use of the space, but I am too attached to it to ever replace it with a pretty nice new one like the photo. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1673896542.jpg Lots more smaller drawers on the other side. It is as long as a 914. Very solid constriction. My wife would love it if I replaced it with a new pretty cabinet. Ain't gonna happen. This a photo of the pump for my scissor lift and the building of the pit. |
I used Gladiator brand cabinets for my man cave garage . Reasonable price at the time with good quality . I bought them from Home Depot don't know if they still sell them . Very happy with them .
|
I used Sears Craftsmen storage bins and bench...but not sure if you can still buy them.

Way too clean. Makes you look like a sociopath.

^^^ I can't help myself...
That pic is from a few years back...I still have the same cars, but the floor is dirtier. :) |
I really lucked out when we bought our house. I worked at TRW at the time and they had a sale of some work benches from the electrical shop and various other shops on campus. I bought one out of the surplus store for $40. It has a reversible masonite top on it that is @1.5" thick, two sets of full depth drawers (36") and is 8' long. My garage had a door on 4x4's for a work bench when we bought it. My brother loaned me his El Camino to haul it home. He wouldn't drive it as it was so loaded down it looked like it'd flip over backwards from the weight of the bench.
It hasn't moved in the 35+ yrs we've been here. The back and top shelf came with it, along with the power strip too. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1673909768.JPG As you can see, I'm a clean freak when it comes to my bench.:p |

I have a couple different benches. But what I really like is the wheeled carts and similar. I have one bench on wheels, one cart, a few file cabinets, a low tool caddy - all on wheels. I just moved my tool box from the right side of the garage to the left this weekend. I have the ability to flex as I want and as projects demand. I have WAY too much crap in the garage which I am working on currently. But, the wheeled, modular carts are pretty awesome. They are ugly and just thrown together. But what do I care. I will just cover them with grease and similar quickly.

Just get a bunch of these from Home Depot! Lot less expensive and you can move them around as needed!

I throw these work benches together at every house. A few two by fours and a sheet of plywood.

At my old house, I had a steep driveway, and on snowy days or icy days I could not drive my 914 up into the garage. I attached a hand crank boat winch to the bench, and I could crank my 914 up into the garage and park it overnight in a warm garage. |
I got the NewAge cabinets on sale. If you watch the site, they get some pretty good deals. They also have a free consultation service that takes the dimensions you give them and generate a rendering and if you use them, they give you a discount on the cabinets you buy.

Delivery to driveway was free. The shelf, tv and wall rack system were not part of that cost. Costco also has newage cabinet sets from time to time at a discount. |
After looking around quite a while and getting sticker shock from the normal mfrs, I went with the Home Depot Husky cabinets and cannot be happier. Strong, full extension drawers and each came with a bamboo top. When delivered the packaging was first rate with a lot of care taken to be sure they were not damaged.
I compared these to the New Age and others. Have looked at cabinets at Barrett Jackson each year, but even with the discounts offered at that show, I was looking at $3k or so for the cabinets I wanted. On sale at $350 a pop, around a grand got me a great set up |
I have Newage Cabinets and workbench bought from Costco. Buying directly from Newage online allows for more configuration options but the price from Costco is hard to beat, especially when they are on sale, as they are periodically.
I'd rate them a 7/10: they are sturdy, easily assembled, and look appealing (for garage furniture). The markdowns come from the following, listed from most to least annoying

Rtrorkt, pics of which cabinets from HD, please.
I have these 2 that I will stack and connect. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1674168143.jpg Then, I saw the Husky tool box in white last weekend. It looked glorious. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1674168203.jpg I've never really considered white tool cabinets, but the more I think about it the more I like it. |
