Staircase Carpet Runner Recommendations

We’re doing some remodeling at our place and have a narrow staircase we want to put a carpet runner on.

The problem is the only stock runners we find are in the 24-36” range.

Does anyone know of a place that sells carpet runners that are less than 24” wide?

We had a quote for a 26” runner which was cut and binded to a 18” width for $1,200.

Ideally we would like 18 in by 20 feet, but could use a runner that is less than 24” by 20 feet.

Thanks for the insight in advance.

I had to have mine done as a custom job but came to regret it. The fully carpeted treads are a PITA to keep clean. The next time I do this I'll go with simple tread pads instead.

$1800 installed? I'd jump on that. Otherwise....

My local carpet places can and will order cut and bound full runners or individual tread runners of any size, quantity and style of carpet. I’d go to a rug/carpet-only store and ask. Price was somewhere around $100/per step depending on choice about a year ago. You can use the same carpet for landings and hall runners, also custom cut and bound as needed.

I’d also go with individual treads. You can remove them every once in a while to clean the steps when necessary. Plus, if your treads are nice-looking wood planks or whatever it’s a shame to totally cover then with carpet, IMO.

I just now measured my carpeted step treads...they are 26'
Seems like a trim job on both sides to fit your width would work.

A carpet shop that does binding will make any size runner and usually just charge for the binding which is about $3. per linear foot. Make sure you have extra in length and it gets trimmed at the top when installed. I recommend a thin high density pad (safer on stairs) for runners and also cut narrower than the runner so the bound edge sits flush on the tread. You can get really fancy with stairs rods and finials but that looks better with a wide runner. Pick a short or loop pile high quality carpet, stairs take a beating.
