I found this interesting. Never thought about it before, but if you use a gas pump with one hose, the gas in the hose is whatever the last guy selected. If you're only buying a gallon for the mower, half your purchase is past the selector, in the hose and the pump.

I'm still using a Korean war era 5 gallon can that my father used, so I buy 4 - 5 gallons at a time, but I'm going to start going to the station with multiple hoses on the pump.

^^^ I've noticed that some people fill their vehicle and then lift the hose up to drain it to get it all.

This fall, I'm going to start using rec fuel in the tractor and other gas engines at home. Only one hose on those pumps.

On our property yesterday. I never in a million years would have expected otters on our property. A "creek" runs through the property, but out of the ~350' of creek, only maybe 100' of it has water most of the time. We have a small "pond" at each end of the property. The one visible pond is maybe 40' x 25' and 5-6' deep. I've never seen the otters there. The other end, I have no idea, maybe a little larger but more shallow (it's in the woods).

^^^ I've never seen them around here...but I think they're found here sometimes.

What I did see yesterday was cool.
I was bike riding on a seldom used asphalt road when I came around a curve and saw a big brown bird right off the shoulder. As I got closer, I saw the white head...Eagle.
I started coasting to see how near I could get. He had his head up and one eye was on me.
I got right across the road from him (prob 12-15 feet) and my bike was coasting to a stop.

As soon as I slowly started to pedal, he took off with a dead muskrat? in his talons. He only got about 6 ft up and he dropped it...it was too big. He kept on going.

Amazing birds.

Is it really a problem with the mower. Do you use anything but 87 octane in the mower, meaning the cheapest, lowest octane fuel that is sold? So the only possible impact would be that you'd get some 89 or 91 or 93 octane mixed in which shouldn't be a problem.

When I get gas for the mower (we mow ~4 acres), I fill 4 cans, 3x 5gal and 1x 2.5gal. But I don't think having half a gallon of 93 in the 2.5gal can would be any sort of issue.

My understanding is that the detergent package at one of those stations is the same in all 3 octane ratings, and presumably the ethanol content is also potentially the same.

Getting a ˝ gal of 87 in the boxster with the other 16.5 gal of 93 is not likely to be an issue.

I don't see the problem (unless your mower runs on 93 octane and you use a 1gal gas can).

I only put E0 in the mowers and snowblower. Used to be that I had to buy 91 octane, but now Kwik Trip and Hy-Vee sell 87 Octane no Ethanol fuel, along with the E10 87, E15 88 octane, and E0 91.

I think there are some places around here that sell E0, but most of it is AV gas or race gas (super high octane). I'd rather use a top tier 87 E10 than a questionable E0 87 that I had to drive 25-50 miles to get. Our mower is new enough that the E10 is probably not a big deal (it certainly never sits in the tank long). And most of the E0 that I know of around here is at least $1/gal more than E10.

Steve, I assume you talk like the first accent, right?

Doesn't look good, but I also get it. And if she was "in the zone" she may not have even noticed (I kind of think that may be the case since she didn't immediately turn around and head for the kids.

Around here, the mower and the snowblower sit a lot, so no ethanol fuel is important. Ethanol attracts water.

First grass cut of the year is late April, maybe early May. Then pretty much continuous until late July / early August, when it goes dormant and I mow much less frequently, maybe every 3 weeks or so. Last mow / leaf mulch is usually in early October, so the mower sits unused almost 6 months.

Same deal with the snowblower. We might get a little snow around Thanksgiving, but usually so little that you can use the shovel, the first snowblower worthy snow might not be until Christmas. Then, depending on the year, you might use it until early March. Then, just when you think you can put it away and take the snow tires off the car, you get slammed in late April / early May. The snowblower sits a lot too.
