On 19 February 1912
Cracker Jack started its "prize in every box" promotion on this day in history, Feb. 19, 1912.
German immigrant F.W. Rueckheim first invented the now-ubiquitous ballpark treat in the late 19th century. It was initially sold at his small candy and popcorn shop, F. W. Rueckheim & Bro., says the website SnackHistory.com.

I used to love Cracker Jack as a kid. Tried to introduce my son to that ~25 years ago and all the prizes were just the "lick and apply" tattoos and the stuff was very stale...

My complaint was the small, odd sized box that they came in. Almost impossible to get your hand in after the first half was gone.

I am of the era of the running animals prizes . . . little plasticized cards that you would tilt back and forth and it would look like a cheetah running on the savannah and such.
