I went through an underpass that was flooded yesterday morning around 10. Rain was heavy. Got off fwy, Cops were there and we had no where to go but go through the flood. Driving against traffic on one side of the street was not happening since cops refuse to let us do that. Median was a curb with traffic backed up for blocks as cops were trying to close off the area. Water was about 18-20" at its deepest. Sidewalk was buried under there. Cops kept pushing us to get through because they wanted to clear the area. There were about 6-7 of us who came through the off ramp right as cal trans were able to close the exit. A Fiat 500 stopped right in the middle while a couple of Hondas went through ever so slowly in front of me. A lower, older 3 series BMW was behind me which took a long time to get to the water's edge. I don't think if he made it through. I was long gone on the other side by now. Thankfully I was in my truck and had 4wd on the fly (not that I needed it). Who know how much mud or sand was under the belly of that ditch. Drove through without any issue. I hate to be stuck under there. Cops seem to not care about our well being or getting stuck in the ditch or not, but was only interested in getting us out of the area no matter the outcome.

There's going to be more of that in the up coming week as we are expecting the entire week of rain.

Nice day out in the foothills. On my way to the regional PCA breakfast with another friend this morning (I normally do not go to those things but out riding my bike instead), all the local mountains are covered in snow. I think slow level is about 1500-2000'. We don't get that too often

That's the 5 north of Sheldon. Always floods and leaves only the HOV lane open. Those cars tried to go around on the right and thought they could make it until they started floating further right.

There was likely standing water under many
freeway underpasses that day and he may have driven
through several of them with no problem.
There is no way of telling if it's 6 inches or 3 feet deep
until you drive through it.
It's obvious after the car gets stalled, but before?
notsomuch

I'd like to think I would have stopped
instead of driving through that but can't say for sure.
I don't recall ever being in that situation.

Another thing I noticed:
looks like he made it most of the way through.

The white SB car stalled at the low point is
nearly up to the windows with water.
Pretty good chance the water rose significantly
AFTER they got stuck making it look worse than it was.
No way could he have gotten to where he was with
water that deep unless the current was strong ;)

Nothing there but click throughs. Not doing that over some silly wet p-car. Seems like there are always a lot of electronics under the seats. Other than seat motors you'd think Porsche was smarter than that.

We were in LA for the Lit Meet and that was the first image I saw when turning on the news that morning.

How does insurance handle a situation like that?

On the side of the road at a major complex with decades of previous traffic..that could be a mistake most of us might reasonably make I would think.
Driving into a river, erm, not-so-much. But who knows the factors involved.

There are plenty of online vids about people who make it and people who don't. There is one in Japan I think where a car turns around and escapes from a tsunami of mud and debris. Just wow. The flash floods in Texas and mudslides in California have always been the culprits that many had no choice avoiding.

I've driven through water when I had my old '88 911. I drove my miata through some water too. I don't think I've had the boxster in as much water as either of the other two. In all cases, I knew where the "snorkle" for the air filter was and how much danger I was in of having the motor ingest water. In any case that I've driven through water I was either VERY familiar with the area so I had a VERY good idea how much water was there, or I'd pull over and stop and watch a few other vehicles drive through to get a good idea how much water was there before I attempted it.

This was at a complex where we were all told ahead of time to stay on the pavement. He had a cheesy for sale sign taped to the other side. It may have been a buddy giving him ****. It said, "for sale, as is, where is. Cal Matt and listed a phone #" My other theory was that it was a perfect marketing ploy. Hundreds of pictures were taken of it yesterday and posted everywhere.

As for making it, “most of the way through,” that reminds me of an old joke about two guys walking across a frozen lake. :)

And yeah, the water definitely rises after the stall if it keeps pouring rain. The storm drains are already plugged or backed up when it floods. I once saw cars completely submerged under a freeway bridge in Minneapolis during a fierce storm. One of them still had the emergency flashers going, under water! I was impressed by that. I think it was a pretty new Mazda but not 100% on that. :)
