Hawk Seale 21 millings driveway - anyone ?

So my driveway under the previous owner started with gravel . When we bought the house 5 years ago we lived with it for two years and decided we wanted something better . Our driveway is approx 10' x 250' so quite long . It is flat in some areas and sloped in others .

We had asphalt millings put down. They sprayed the millings with diesel fuel and rolled with a machine . Looked pretty good but we soon learned heavy rains started washing away the millings.

Yesterday I had a guy out to give me a quote for asphalt millings to be coated with a product called Hawk Seale 21 which is a polymer coating . This guy said they use finely ground millings applied to about 4-4.5 inches thick . Then they apply a coat of the special sauce and roll the surface .

They wait an hour and apply second coat . Then roll . Wait another hour apply third coat and roll that in . The polymer supposedly binds the millings into one solid surface that ends up about 2.5 inches thick . Completely waterproof so in theory won't wash away . In my case the product is Georgia DOT approved .

I went online and found several videos and learned about the process . I am waiting for the quote to come in . Any of you guys know anything about this stuff ? Do you know anyone that has a driveway or parking lot made of this ?

I will follow this. I have some smaller barn floors this could be perfect for.

Hawk one of the areas I am getting quotes for is a 20x24 under a carport . That is where I have my truck camper stored . He did say he had some concerns of minimal weight distribution of the camper lift may make indentations in the product . So long term storage may be an issue . But he also said putting down simple 2x scrap pieces of wood will distribute the weight . When I get the quote I will update this posting . He did state generally speaking this product/process is 40-45 percent cheaper than conventional asphalt .

Excellent. I have a lot of shop space but just opened up the back side of this tobacco barn so we can drive through. There will be garage doors at both ends.

I'd like it to be dry and also allow me to work on equipment being stored without moving it to the shop.

Thanks again...first I have heard of this stuff.

To be honest it's the first I had heard about it also . Guy was advertising locally and I contacted him . Said he researched it for two years . The guy that invented the HS 21 special sauce is in Idaho I think he said. Supposedly some states are starting to use this for road projects . I am not convinced yet but trying to learn more .

Asphalt millings can also be reheated, a little more asphalt added (asphalt is the petroleum product "glue") and then used as material for repaving. But....this would be more expensive than just placing and rolling the millings only. The latter, which is quite cost-effective, works great for many light-duty residential surfaces.

I've used millings without the coating, but I'd check with a local paver and see if the cost of what they call in my neck "airport" mix isn't similar-its actual pavement but with larger aggregate and significantly cheaper than normal asphalt.

Update: the contractor flaked he's MIA ☹️ . He came out and measured and said he would mail me a quote . Have received nothing in the mail and zero communication . I have tried contacting him with zero results . Disappointing .

So I continue my search for a driveway solution that will work for us .

A neighbor used pea gravel on a sloped driveway and it constantly rolls across the sidewalk and into the street. What a mess. I'm sure if he spins the tires it will create ruts.

I had a 3/4 crushed stone driveway before which is significantly larger and sharp aggregate. Great traction for the hill in winter. The only problem was that it eventually filled in with dirt and compacted hard, and then a few feet of grass started growing from that. The loose surface stones still got picked up by the snowblower and chucked at high speed at cars and the side of the house.

Can't you get a extra petroleum blacktop coating on millings, or does that not work?

I am pretty sure I will have to go conventional asphalt or concrete to have a chance at a long lasting solution . Will start getting quotes as spring is quickly approaching .

I've seen this company's product(s) used with good success on graveled container and pipe yards, which receive about as much hardcore wear-and-tear as anything you're going to find. And in Houston no less, which has soil that is notoriously difficult to keep stabilized.

I'm surprised that towns still allow spraying the ground with diesel.

Garage
4" 1.5" stone.
2" #57 gravel
2" crusher run.
Make sure to slope properly.
Crusher run will pack like concrete, gives awesome traction, and wont allow weeds to grow.
Key to erosion is proper slope and pitch.

BK911 that sounds great but to do that everything I currently have would have to come out . If I can find a few contractors worth a crap I can get some estimates and go from there . My wife is starting to complain so this is creeping up the priority list 😋
