Metal to fiberglass adhesive

I’m moving my trusty Issac head and neck restraint from my old helmet to my new helmet and need an adhesive to join metal to fiberglass. The two pieces are about 2“ x 1“.

When I installed it on my old helmet, it came with a green two-part epoxy.

Any suggestions on type/brand to use?

I think I would call the manufacturer for what they supply or use . Too important of a safety system to gamble .

They are out of business.😢

Different race sanctions require a one handed release and although it’s a safe system, it takes two hands to release it….Left and right.

Just a thought. Auto body panel adhesive.

Check out the tech data sheet

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b40066467/

If you buy a single two part cartridge it may not be too expensive. Skip the applicator gun is what I'm thinking. Mix by hand.

$55 on amazon

That would probably be plenty strong enough. Here's a smaller size.

I need to attach a ring anchor to my poly kayaks. Would any of these work?

As this is a critical life safety device, you should treat it as such.

Can you find the MSDS (or whatever the current name is) for the original adhesive? Then, use that.

I have yet to see anything adhered with 3M 5200 come unstuck . It grips like crazy . Try to buy the smallest tube and try to use the entire tube . It starts curing as soon as you remove the cap .

This stuff is nuts! You'll break whatever it is glued to before the glue gives.

3M 8115 is the panel bonding adhesive used in automotive manufacturing and repair process. Experience leads me to believe that the gel coat of the helmet will give out before the bond does.

How does that work? The belt feeds through the large roller piece on the right (above) and then it pins to the helmet? To release it, you have to reach up, find the pins (2 of them) and pull them? I must be missing something. There's no way I would try to do that in a fire situation.

I use a Necksgen. Pop the camlock on the harness belt and climb out.

3M Scotch-Weld 2216.

Surface preparation is more important than the adhesive itself.

I was looking at this one as well and it’s on my shortlist.

I just happen to have some bonding adhesive from 3M. That was on my shortlist.

Haha! That really was an option back in the day with machine screws and washers but I used the supplied adhesive.

The rollers attached to the shoulder harnesses and the restraint connects to the helmet with a push pin. They are like small shock absorbers that allow you to move your head but in quick situations like an accident, they hold the head up. Push the lock pin button in and pull. It only takes a couple seconds.

Per the original instructions it was advised to sand off only the gelcoat so that the adhesive would properly adhere.

Strongest glue you can use to bond aluminium to fibreglass is 3M 9323 for use in ambient temperatures

Every F1, Indycar, Le Mans winning chassis for probably the last 20yrs will have been bonded with this stuff

Preparation and cleanliness is just as important as choosing the right glue

I was doing a search on the Isaac and I found a post by Moses. Back in 2008, he bought one on eBay for $28!!!

In the thread, Jack Olson, posted that he uses one.

Mine cost around $800.

ISAAC head and neck restraint. Thoughts?
