the STARLESS tomato.
super interesting.
most of mine are planted in the ground at the office. but I brought one and dropped it into a dragon pot at my house. great soil, some organic bat poop and fish guts fertilizer the pot growers embrace. it doesn't even look like a regular tomato plant. the leaves are gnarly. really hardy leaves. it already has some fruit!! it is growing faster, taller at least than the Roma and San M plants nearby. I can't wait. I have a very sparse garden this year, because I predict crushing water restrictions. thanks Starless. my entire office is looking forward to see how these plants play out. summer came early this year. might be 90 deg today. ![]()

That barely even looks like a tomato plant.
This year I planted 1 Sun Sugar and 7 Early Girl/Roma plants. The soil is well-tilled, I plant them about 14" deep and fill the hole with compost. Most years, I get a decent yield. Once every several years, the stars align (and the weather unfolds just like the tomatoes like it) and yield is unbelievable. Fingers crossed. For gardeners who can things, NOW is the time to get jars if you think you will need them. I predict a severe jar shortage in August/September.

Where/how did you get it?
My wife is a Master Gardener and this would be a great Mother's Day gift - I kid you not.

Mine are taking forever to sprout. They've been at the cotyledon stage for two weeks now.

my friend started them for me. he said they were really fast. I didn't get specifics. he did say they grew way faster than the rest.

he said 4 days to get to Cotyledon stage (I googled it) then 1-2 days later he got the first leaf development. good luck. you have a heat pad under the soil?

Mine sprouted well last year, I don't remember having any problems. I kept the soil at 80 degrees until they were 3 inches tall, then they were on their own. The plants got huge and the tomatoes were huge. We intended to save some seeds for this year but somehow managed to forget.

I thought they were a variety of tomato plant. I met a friend of mine for lunch and we went to the big Mennonite greenery. "Can I get your best Starless tomatoes"? Oops. PM sent.

I did till they germinated but removed them from the pad. Maybe I should put them back on.

Fantastic.
She is a plant expert so I bought a few interesting things from the Mennonites. The seeds will be a surprise. We have seed trays everywhere, growing lights, the works. Thank you, Vash. Deeply appreciated.

Guys, the "Starless" tomato came from Juan, a Pelican in Connecticut. I don't know where they came from originally, or what their real name is. Juan very kindly sent some of us seeds from his tomatoes last year.
