Thoughts on this 996 C4?

POS to be avoided at all costs? Or still has some life left?

https://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/pts/d/anacortes-1999-porsche-911-c4/7582195830.html

1999 porsche 911, 6sp manual AWD. 158k miles, staggered 19" wheels, aftermarket exhaust, runs and drives pretty well, been a daily driver for years. Not a cream puff by any stretch but in good shape, no dents or dings. Just scratched paint and some minor paint chips here and there. Black leather interior, custom nardo grey paint, factory turbo twist wheels included.

Priced for quick sale, someone keyed the car on the passenger side pretty badly. no previous maintenance records on anything, I've owned it for 3 years. Clean title in my name. No trades, needs some minor TLC. Wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere. Again no trades, don't ask. No I won't take 15k cash.

Located 1 hour north of Seattle WA

17k... I would buy it at that price.

I won't be in the market for a non-roller until next year; I'll buy it off you for 7k after you pop the engine.

I own a 99 C4 and love it . The one you are looking at has a GT3 front bumper cover that costs $1500.00 . The rocker covers another 2k if OEM . The rear taco wing another 1500 if OEM . The rear diffuser is aftermarket as I just added one to mine .

That cold air intake is a joke a factory 3.8 air box is the way to go . With that mileage a PPI should be performed to check for bore scoring . Any maintenance records showing the IMS bearing being replaced is a plus . The C4 is a nice driver and handles great . Creature comforts work and they are relatively easy to work on .

No mention of maintenance records. With that many miles the IMS is likely not a concern. I sold my ‘03 996 with similar miles and invested $6k just prior on AOS, full hoses replace, suspension and brakes. Maybe that’s the seller’s idea of some “TLC”? Personally I don’t like the body updates and color. The seller should take $14k cash offer IMO.

PPI. If it passes, get it.

If it passes a PPI and just as important your inspection, I'd say yes.

Couldn't agree more. The box gets air from outside the engine bay, the 'cold air' intake gets hot air from inside the engine bay.

Wheeler Dealers did a 996 a few years ago. Ant explains the concept to a T around 33:00 on the video

Okay, a little off topic but watching that Wheeler Dealers episode reminded me how irritating Mike Brewer is. All the scripted nonsense is such a turn off.

Watching M539 Restorations on Youtube which is 99% mechanical work and problem solving is immensely better in execution.

Thanks all for the input!

This is a bit of a pipe dream for me. Something my kid sent thinking I should check out.

I haven't driven any 911's since my '71...

I'm thinking the C4 would be pretty much perfect year round in the PNWet and the little snow we get?

.
It was better with Edd China and now with Elvis. Ant, not so much but that may have been down to the show moving to the US.

There are plenty of unmolested 996s around. In very nice condition.

I owned a 2004 996C4S for about 5 years. Actually sold it to a friend with about 105k in miles on it. If not well maintained, it will bite you in the arse. By this mileage the suspension should have been gone through, cooling system, water pump, coil packs, overflow tank, AOS, RMS. I had to have my trans rebuilt. $5k to the builder CMS, plus shipping and R&R. Mine was originally from the midwest and I had to do the exhaust myself. Cats are expensive. I went with high flow ones from SOUL when one bit the dust. I was lucky to find some good used mufflers. The exhaust can rust bad. They are great driving cars but need to be maintained like any Porsche, and the water cooled have the additional complexities of the cooling system, etc. Not to say don't do it, but one man's TLC is another mans $15k in deferred maintenance. This is not counting the fiddly bits like the cabin HVAC fan which like to out, the window regulators which are POS's, etc.

It's never a bad idea to put a package of brand new gaskets in the pictures of a car you're selling to let the new buyer know there's adventure ahead!

Why does that Wheeler Dealer clip launch automatically when I open this thread? As a reminder that Mike Brewer is the most annoying person in the automotive world?

For some reason I thought this was an 'S'.
I'd pass on the keyed paint alone.
