My b'day was drawn for number 66...a sure draft. Two months later, I got a letter to report to Detroit for my induction physical. I was in college at the time and passed the physical.
Two weeks later, Nixon was on tv saying the troop pullout would start immediately. I never went....but a lot of my friends did. My older brother was there.

Mine was 146 for 1970 and they went to 141 If I recall correctly. I was 1A at the time, took a pre-induction physical and proudly passed.
For a long time I used to think I missed out on a lot by not being drafted. The older I got, the more I learned about our involvement in the region/war, the more I began to realize I dodged a pretty big bullet by not having to go over there. I know I had a lot of friends that went over there. My neighbor at the time got drafted and went. Ended up being a Sargent. His advice to me when he learned I might be going was to always try my hardest on all the tests, but don't let on to any 'friends' that I was doing so. He was kind of like the big brother I and my brother never had. We lost him six weeks after losing our dad, both to heart attacks. It was a rough year that year, but my son was born too and kind of evened things out.

Baz, thank you. I consider it an honor and privilege to serve my country in time of war. Vietnam 1970.

God speed to all those who fell in battle. Hardest thing was going to the memorial wall, was there the opening day.
#51 of the last draft
