what is the problem with tik tok?

Never used it. Get many unsolicited pop ups.

masraum 03-23-2023 10:35 AM

It's a Chinese app/site. It can be used to gather information.

cockerpunk 03-23-2023 10:35 AM

that its a chinese company, instead of an american one, taking and manipulating you based on your data.

How much do you trust the Chinese government? For me even lees trust than the US government.

I don't have it on my phone. I saw one news report that many people get almost all their news from it.

Try to find something about the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests on it. Good luck.

Soon as I noticed it was on our windows 11 apps, I deleted it.

100%

its a cash grab by american tech companies to try and get a monopoly on americans data.

the reason they are going after tiktok is because its beating them at their own game. tiktok is both larger than instagram reels, and something like 5x larger than twitter.

You found it on Tick Tok. I am totally surprised.

I think one big thing is that is is aimed at kids. They will share anything and everything as they never understood privacy. It will come back to bite them as the become young adults. No my problem.

There is way too much oversharing. For some kids and adults, it becomes an income stream.

That’s certainly the minority but between YouTube, TikTok and Instagram there are a lot of people who look to 15 minutes of internet fame or notoriety as their career.

I’ve gotten sucked in for the cooking videos. To see a full recipe done boiled down into <3 minutes gives me an idea if it’s something I want to get into.

The car/truck/motorcycle and life of a mechanic videos are entertaining too. So yes, CCP knows I'm into food and things with motors.

All the data that is shared through TikTok is also shared through Google, FB, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.

It would be much cheaper and easier for the Chinese to obtain this info by simply buying it.

TikTok creators/contributors who post about this, seem to largely suspect it is either US gov is upset they don't have a foothold/control of the sharing algorithm, or that US big data is lobbying for the shutdown to reduce competition.

Some of the best AI info, RE info, World news, financial news I've seen of late has come from there.

What was the basis for deleting it?

As noted I see tictoks on YouTube shorts and folks have been sending me similar short videos from facebook.

I'm not saying I clearly know why it's bad, like one of our younger members, I'm just curious.

I wasn't sure how to parse that sentence. Both US and Chinese company are mining you for data and manipulating your purchases, but it's less acceptable when it's a foreign power doing it. Same reason we no longer use Kaspersky anti virus much these days, LOL!

What we can see and what is visible in China are two very different things.
