Based on still unpublished and undisclosed number of carbon dates and stratigraphic studies, Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, an Indonesian geologist who is an expert in earthquake geology and geotectonics, suggested on that the site had been built as a giant pyramid 9,000 to 20,000 years ago, implying the existence of an otherwise unknown advanced ancient civilization.[11][12][13] However, none of these radiocarbon dates, along with their stratigraphic context, have been formally published and the age of this site based on these dates differs greatly depending on the publication consulted even when the publications are by the same author explaining the results of the same research.[2]

Natawidjaja's analysis was questioned by other scientists. Vulcanologist Sutikno Bronto suggested that the carbon dating result was influenced by weathering and concluded that the elevation is the neck of an ancient volcano and not a man-made pyramid.[13][14] Thirty-four Indonesian scientists signed a petition questioning the motives and methods of the Hilman-Arif team.[13] Archaeologist Víctor Pérez described Natawidjaja's conclusions as pseudoarchaeology.[2]

Natawidjaja's conclusions gained the attention of Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who set up a task force.[2] An archaeologist who did not wish to be named due to the involvement of the country's president, stated:

In archaeology we usually find the 'culture' first … Then, after we find out the artefact's age we'll seek out historical references to any civilisation which existed around that period. Only then will we be able to explain the artefact historically. In this case, they 'found' something, carbon-dated it, then it looks like they created a civilisation around the period to explain their finding.[13]
Very cool regardless of how old it is.

I thought the thread title was Thai food.

So I am guessing nobody watched the video?
Truly fascinating stuff.
This temple, and others, are rewriting human history.
Or at least trying too; Governments and academia (redundant) are trying very hard to suppress this info.

No doubt. It's always surprising to me when academia can disagree so much. It seems that it can go either way. One side can stand on sketchy data. Or the other side can refuse to accept good data often because "that's not possible, they couldn't possibly have done that in the past."

And, of course, govts shouldn't have any place in the acceptance or changing of scientific or historical discovery.

I had an amazing time when I went to Indonesia to visit my wife's family. Her father passed away 3 days before she was born, and her mother raised 5 children alone. While she grew up in poverty, her eldest brother found a way out by joining Lion Air and becoming one of their top pilots. He used his income to pay for his brother to become a lead engineer for many of the countries top projects, and one sister become a head nurse in a prominent hospital.
I would get up around 4:30am as the Muslims would start their prayers. It would start quietly, but grow quite loud as others joined in. All the people I met were extremely nice and polite.
Aside from Bali, I was quite popular due to many only having seen white people on tv. I was asked to pose for with many locals for photos, and the young students were very excited to speak with me and try out their English. One group of students nicknamed me Mr. Hot. My wife explained to me it was because they found it interesting that I was sweating, while to them the 90' temps were normal.
I initially thought of renting a car, but ended up hiring a Chauffeur. The swarms of small cars and motorbikes, left hand driving, and other factors made it a wise choice. It's interesting to see a family of 5 on a small bike zipping in and out of traffic.
One of the issues was the country is composed of numerous islands. We spent a lot of time in airplanes hopping around the country. Having family as our tour guide I was able to see many amazing parts of their ancient and modern culture. I didn't have time for Komodo Island, but maybe next time.

Interesting that most of the site seems to be built from basaltic columns (same thing that the Giants Causeway is made from, plus Devil's Tower, and other locations).

The president had a helipad built on top of the pyramid so he could visit the site. Genius!

It would not surprise me at all if there's all sorts of issues on both sides of this study/research/science. Are there folks that are poo-pooing the research because it contradicts their beliefs, research, and science. Could there be issues because other scientists want to redistribute the money that's being spent on this research? Absolutely. I'm, I think, very open minded about the past, and often think that some scientists hold steadfast to some old ideas too much.

The video does sound like one of those TV shows though. I'd love to see some good science on the site.

Weird how they look the same. Perhaps all columnar basalt on the earth was created by an advanced pre ice age civilization? Or perhaps this kook has a severe case of motivated thinking?

Philomena Cunk did a documentary on the history of man, maybe give it a watch? She interviews experts and asks interesting questions, for example:

The pyramids… were they built top down or bottom up?

I visited rinca, did the guided walking tour… never felt so much like prey before. No wonder the boat crew wouldn’t come with. Me for one I’m not going back. Komodos are not nice. Pretty island but I’d rather be snorkeling with sharks.

Gobekli tepe is dated around 12ooo years old due to stuff they found laying around at the site.
And they've only excavated ~5% of it so far.
Some think the older structures could be over 20ooo years old.
History is being slowly rewritten folks

I'm not exactly following where you're poking your fun. I know that basaltic columns are a natural phenomena. That doesn't keep folks from possibly using them to make stuff (probably easier to separate than cutting stone in a quarry). Based on the photos, it certainly looks like someone used pieces of columnar basalt to make things.

I buy into there being a civilization (or maybe a couple/few) that used that location over a period of time and built it up in layers (not a new or ground breaking theory). And I'm even OK with pushing timelines. But I want to see good, scientific evidence supporting or backing up those claims. A little scientific disagreement is not a problem, and is to be expected, and probably healthy. But there doesn't seem to be much on this site, which I would expect.

I watched the episode and I wasn’t convinced. I’d be delighted if it were true.

As Sagan said: extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence…

And besides, isn’t the earth only 5500 yo?

There’s no doubt there have been human like critters in the area for a long time. Land bridge to Australia, etc. Flores man. Actual stone ruins in Sulawesi. What I take issue with is the ‘advanced civilization’ part.

I think you covered it well with the following.

I'm game to something ground breaking, advanced folks farther back than we would have imagined, but I'm going to need some compelling evidence. Based on what I've seen, it's not out there. I think some archeological digs, are, unfortunately, poorly run. I don't know if this site qualifies, but I think that's a possibility.

I was a bit skeptical at first too.
But i fell into the rabbit hole.
Now I am an absolute believer.
Lots of info out there that could blow your mind if you let it.

Watched the video...thanks. Evidently, science is never really settled. Unless, of course, it's about climate change.
