Dishwasher Rack Issue
I have a 15 year old Asko dishwasher that has rusting dish racks. I bought a plastic type coating you paint on like nail polish, but that is not working as well as I'd like. Replacement racks are over $250 each, so not very cost effective. Anyone had a similar issue and found a solution that works? Thanks!

No, it's called Uber Goop. Found it on Amazon. Have you tried the Plastidip product?

When our Maytag's rack started to deteriorate, I cleaned the areas effected and coated them with white silicon caulk like you'd use for a bathtub. Has worked well as it has stayed put and the rusting seems to have quit. I actually cut out the bad parts as they weren't all that big and made sure to seal the ends of where I'd cut.
I'd take a picture for you but the dishwasher is actually running right now so I can't. And our dishwasher is easily 10 years older than yours is.

You do/will of course have to eradicate the existing rust before you put any coating on. If you don't kill the existing rust, it'll never stop. You don't have to get down to shiny metal, you can potentially use one of the "rust converters" once you get it mostly clean.

Caulk might be just the ticket here. I think I need to do a better job on prep before coating. Pretty tedious work, but it must be done.....Thanks for sharing.

250 for a rack is an obscenity.

We just had a lower rack replaced by Samsung (junk) under warranty. I believe it was $279 if we had to pay, Knives/Utensils cutting into the Poly. If you love your dishwasher spend the money, if not throw it out. $500 may get you half way to a new one.

Wow, 15 years for a dishwasher. that's good going. 8 or 10 years is the longest I've ever got out of a dishwasher.
In regard to the racks; you could consider powdercoating them. Or better still buy another old dishwasher of the same model for next to nothing, keep the good racks and dump the machine. |

I like powdercoating.
Get them media blasted and powder coat they will last longer than the rest of the dishwasher. My dishwasher is like 30 years old

The racks on our 4 year old Bosch are falling apart. Really not happy. I have a 10 year old GE in a rental house and the racks look like new.

Plastic wheels/etc will probably have to be removed for the oven.
They might be attached 'permanently'.

Assuming the replacement part will last like the original, just go ahead and buy the replacement part. Yes it is outrageous but so is just about everything. Be glad they still offer the part. Check it off and go to the next item on the list.

On ours the ends of the tines often rust.
I have some thin shrinkwrap. Was thinking of squirting some silicone into a short length and using that to cap off the end. (trimmed below rust)
