Question about a gun sight

Looking at buying a sight/scope for my older 22 rifle.
The one I'm looking at states that it can only be used with 'picatinny rails'

I'm not sure if that means what I already have? Or do I need an adapter?
The pic shows one of the two parallel grooves in the barrel....are they the rails?

Steve, most .22 rifles like yours have a grooved receiver. Those will accept 11mm scope rings that clamp onto the dovetail formed by those two grooves.

If the scope you're considering is like most (scope w/separate rings that attach to rifle), it probably comes with rings that mount to a Picatinny rail (different dimensions than the grooves on your .22). If so you have a couple of options: 1) buy the scope and buy new 11mm rings to mount to your .22 or 2) buy a dovetail-to-Picatinny adapter, which will mount between your rifle's grooves and the rings of the scope you're interested in.

I'd choose option 1, mostly because it'll keep your scope height closer to the axis of the rifle bore and you may not need a cheek riser to keep your eye in line w/your scope.

Hope this helps.

If you haven't already purchased your sight, there are lots of red dot sights on Amazon w/11mm mounts.

If you already have it, there are plenty of low profile adapters, too:

I just did a search on Amazon for your #2 suggestion
They have them for a low price....any suggestion of which would be best?

I posted while you were posting.
Thanks for the links. I'll prob go with the second one....looks less bulky.

It will work with the red dot scope I linked? Just want to be sure.

Did a varmit chase you on the bike ride?

I did a quick search on red dot optics- looks like there are some that attach directly into 11mm rails, and you could forgo the picatinny. That is a potential problem with needing to raise the comb on the stock, but probably not a real big deal with the red dot, compared to a scope.

Also- personal preference, I recently went with green dot instead of red dot. Seems clearer in my eyesight. If you can drop by a gun store, might want to try both. Some people prefer one or the other.

^^^
Well...the one I linked (red dot) is already on the way. I ordered it last night and this am read about it needing Picatinny Rails.

If I carry any weapon on my bike...It will be a 2 foot piece of re-bar. Getting tired of dogs going for my ankles.

Aha!!! I see. You should be fine.

Yep, should work fine. If you want some reassurance, you might measure the width of the dovetail on your rifle.

Just did that...11.8 mm from the top edges. Should fit...ordered it.

I'll post when it comes tomorrow.

Steve, a sight that would be good on that gun is one of those ones with a little round hole as a foresight and a blade at the end of the barrel. Sort of period correct for the gun.

Maybe google peep site and see what you think.

^^^ As like one of these?

It would have to work with the blade that is on the end of the rifle already. It looks like it's permanently attached.

I might try one if this red dot doesn't work out.

The rifle is a late 50's Sears .22 semi-automatic. My father bought it for me when I was 8 years old.
Works perfect...except it doesn't want to auto-eject when using shorts. Longs work great.

^^^ lol..I googled 'pics of rifle peep sights' without thinking.

Kudos to my K thru 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Southland...she was a stickler for spelling and cursive handwriting.
(peep sites weren't around then...she would have died then, if they did)

LOL

The guys at gun club were talking about peep sights and I pretended I knew what they were talking about. When I got home I googled it, and not having had Mrs. Southlands help, I spelt it wrong. Right when GF walked into the room and said "What the f* are you looking at?" Ummm, unfortunate timing.

I have this:

It's an Irish Blackthorn cane. Very light and very strong. Think carbon fiber strong. The cut down thorn bumps on the thing will shred skin. It's literally a lethal weapon in the hands of an expert but an amateur can wield it well enough.

^^^ That would prob be better than re-bar.
I'm afraid re-bar might kill the dog.
Either one...there is danger of it bouncing off the dogs head and going into my spokes.

The adapter rails came today. Everything fitted up perfectly.
Now, all that's left is the sighting in. I have my 5 year old laser borescope ready for that.
pics of both.....
