Caitlin Clark is awesome. Iowa 77, South Carolina 73.

wdfifteen 04-01-2023 06:06 AM

What she lacks in height and weight she makes up for with skill and character. This has been a great series to watch. I was disappointed that VT didn't hold out again Lousiana, but if the final had been VT vs Iowa I would have had a hard time choosing which one to root for.
Pulling for Caitlin and the Hawkeyes.

pound for pound the best basketball player in the country. at least on the college level.

Amazing how superior college basketball is to the pros --- even the mens is superior.

Seahawk 04-01-2023 11:33 AM

I DVR'd the second half and watched it this morning.

Fun to watch, relatable to my old Catholic HS basketball, "two dribbles and a pass" ethos.

There were some outstanding players on the floor.

wdfifteen 04-03-2023 06:54 AM

The officiating sucked in the final. I think both teams were a little spooked by the number of fouls that were being called early on. The technical against Caitlyn Clark late in the game was total BS. The LSU coach was on the floor more than most of the players - but no call.

Iowa couldn't seem to get their feet under them, and didn't play their best game. LSU deserved to win, but the officiating ruined the game.

I have never been one to focus on the refs, but I had to stop watching the DVR of the game and just fast forwarded to the end because the refs were so awful, both teams.

Such a nice young woman.

It was like the game was too fast for the refs. Bad calls on both sides.

Not a fan but that was the exact same gesture Clark had used when beating Louisville .

Did she do it right in the face of an opponent?

I wouldn’t say it was in her face but it was clearly directed at Hailey Van Lith.

Ok... I don't follow women's sports but just happened to click on this final game and it was so good I ended up watching the whole thing. I could not believe the technical called on Clark and then at the end when LSU had the game wrapped up that in your face poor sportsmanship when they were standing next to each other during free throws.

Clark just took it..... She also did not mouth off about LSU in the press conference but two of the LSU girls sure did in interviews after the game.... Low class from my viewpoint.

I can’t say I follow women’s basketball either but as the teams I follow got eliminated from the men’s tournament, I paid a little more attention to the women’s.

I didn’t see the post game interviews but the reaction Clark got for her taunts was very different than what Reese got.

EDIT: I will add that likely one of the coldest taunts I’ve seen was Clarks dismissive wave of an unguarded player during the South Carolina game. When the player was lining up for an open shot, Clark waved her off as if she wasn’t worth Clark’s effort.

Evidently, that player is someone Reese considers a friend so when given the opportunity to avenge her friend, Reese took it.

If you think it was racial, I would disagree. Reese, a remarkable player and from all accounts, a really fine person as well, did an extended dish at Clark...I watched in a bit of surprise: Mulkey needed to get ahead of that.

BTW, as a white appearing fellow playing slightly above my pay grade in HS basketball in the '70's, pick-up and Navy stuff in the 80's, half the 90's, I have heard every racial slur imaginable, on and off the court. It just is what it is...a trite but true saying. So I get it, trust me.

Again, BTW, when my family moved to SC my junior year of HS, it ws the first time I saw women's HS basketball played at a high level. My HS in California did not have a women's basketball team in a league.

In SC, the varsity women played the game immediately before us. They were excellent and had a much better record that the men's team, of which I was slightly above average (think 2nd/3rd team All Conference in single and two A). We sat in the stands and watched the first halkf of very game they played. I enjoyed it.

I hope it is just what it WAS. I would like to think as a society we have progressed at least a little from what it was in rural Ohio in 1968. But sometimes I wonder.

KFC911 04-03-2023 12:19 PM

I never heard any racial stuff playing b-ball as a youngin' .... and "trash talking" was part of the game. MJ and Larry Bird were brutal ;).

That's the only game I saw .... it was a great game and the officiating totally sucked .... bigly :(.

Those ladies can shoot :).

One black girl I used play against back in college grew up playing against her brothers and played like a "brother" .... slacking up against her meant yer azz wuz gonna lose!

It was an awesome game and effort by both teams.... well done!

And the refs sucked....

We all do.

Again, I was a good, not great, basketball player. I never dunked in a game because the ensuing fallout, the sheer surprise, would have made Chernobyl look like a a house fire, bent time and space. Or, truth be told, I would have spilled blood, my own.:D

I was not Luke Skywalker and was the first to know it.

But I could dribble, run, shoot and pass and never stopped moving (all the below the rim stuff) which can occasion an insult or three.

So I have no issue with the gestures, either player, but the duration of the taunt needed editing by the LSU Coach. That is about it.

But the refs: I umpired baseball for a few years and was acutely aware that no one on the field or in the stands was there to watch me...I tried very hard to not influence the game. I got the sense watching the excellent play of these young women deserved better.

Apparently Clark used that gesture often enough throughout the entire series it was being viewed as her signature taunt.

If that’s accurate ya kinda gotta admit she was asking for it.

If you’re gonna talk **** the whole time (and yes, that’s a form of **** talking) then you better make sure you win the whole thing cause if you don’t, well, you shouldnt be surprised if the **** gets flung right back atcha.

Either they are both, Reese and Clarke, guilty of poor sportsmanship or both are cocky passionate players and their expressions are part of the game.

If they are viewed differently for the same behaviour then yeah, people are going to ask, as they should, why.

^^^^ This! Just saw a quote by Clark saying that Reese should not be critisized, saying that both of them and others were part of the "trash talking" throughout the tournament.

.... but I must add....

Catfight :D!

I was 6‘4“ in 70’s high school and the only thing I could dribble, was drool. My dad was 6’4” and played center for Clemson. I did not get his athletic genes for basketball. 😂
