The revised NHL OT system makes comparisons misleading.

In 1976 the Canadiens went 60-8-12 (W-L-T) for 132 points in 80 games, or 0.825 hockey.

As of today the Bruins have 50 wins, but only 43 of those are 'regulation wins'.

Their real record is:

43 Wins
5 Overtime Wins
5 Overtime Loses
2 Shoot-Out Wins
9 Loses

64 Games played.

In 'old hockey terms' they are 43-9-12, or 98 points.

They have 18 games remaining. Going undefeated would put them at 61-9-12, or 134 points in 82 games, or 0.817 hockey.

Yes, they are at the top of the league. All-time great? a) No, not in any historical terms, b) Let's see if they can win the cup. NHL history is littered with President's Cup Round 1 failures.

I take NHL history and comparisons very seriously. I saw a lot of the great teams and players, I remember their dominance.

They are having a good season no doubt. However, as C4S has pointed out the Presidents Cup is often an albatross. the second season is the one that counts most, and again they are having a good season 1.

As a another point of reference for 'quality' of any team, Moneypuck does not rate the Bruins as the top NHL team statistically. They are second, behind Carolina, and the Bruins are just ahead of the Leafs and Oilers.

As much as I want Toronto to lose to Tampa in Round 1, I would be equally happy to see the Bruins send them off tot he gold course. Again.

V-cek stood tall tonight shutting out the 'Canes on 32 saves. That moves them into a first place tie with the 'Canes. Comin' for ya Joe!

NJ is quietly having a very good season. They will not be an easy team come playoff time.

But to me they feel like Toronto. Lots of skill, but are they tough enough to go toe-to-toe with Boston/Tampa?

As far as stats then and now... True that the OT system does skew things BUT, "back in the day" there was no parity for large and small market teams (a la the salary cap) AND Canadians had a massive home court advantage. The Habs haven't had that home grown stars advantage in many decades and the names on the cup reflects that.

p.s. The 3rd point for OT winners was started in 1999-2000 and no one has come this fast to 50 games in 23 years.
