iPad help
My wife got a new iPad for her birthday yesterday. Her old one had the charging cord end break off in the port such that I couldn't get it out.
Her new iPad is randomly shutting off when she goes on the internet. We updated the software this morning and did the side by side transfer of data. All seemed well until I came home from my travels today and she said it goes blank/black and restarts on her. Any help? We got it from Amazon the other day, it is brand new. What gives? |
I'm guessing there's some app on it that doesn't agree with it. Sorry I can't be more help.

Software as in the OS or the apps? Is it too late to contact Apple?
You might need to start from scratch, I think masraum has the right idea. Whenever I have had weird Apple problems a web search usually yields a solution. Good luck. |
I'm assuming (there's that word again) that all the apps downloaded from the old iPad correctly. It worked well and didn't have any of these blacking out problems. Since we can no longer charge it up I've not turned it on to see what OS version it was running vs the new one, which immediately asked for a software upgrade which we allowed it to do, not that we could have stopped it.
I'm not an Apple guy at all so this stuff is doubly frustrating to me. |
Been using iPads a long time and they have been totally reliable and do nothin weird. We have 4 of them
Start by rebooting the ipad and see what happens https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/force-restart-ipad-ipad9955c007/ipados Is this refurbished or brand new ? |
-if- you can still get into the old one then I'd back it up to icloud post haste. If you already have then great.
Wipe the new one and my suggestion is that you don't completely migrate everything, but just the importants. Contacts, calendar, email. Pull apps from the app store as you need them and don't migrate the 9000 never-used apps from the old one. (just a guess.) :) It'll be faster and fresher and cleaner for the trouble, and almost guaranteed your problem will go away. |
Typing from an iPad. You should have x days of support. Forget the name. You can telephone or chat this. They are good at it. Should be up and playing wordle in no time.
|
Is the memory full? Does the new one have less physical storage than the old one? Maybe you filled it up to the point it can’t function. If go to the apple store if I was you.

Unusual.
Apple products come with a standard 1 year warranty which can be extended to 3 years with Apple Care purchase. I would initiate a return to Amazon and just buy a new one at the same time. If the problem occurs with the replacement then we are reasonably assured it's something in the the transfer / from the old device. At that point get Apple support involved. |
My wife would fight with fists to keep her iPad. I bought her an iPad original for Christmas years ago. I have her second one in my garage to play Pandora. She has some current generation now that I got her for Christmas recently.
The old iPad in the garage is old, but works fine, except it wants me to log in with my iTunes account but it is so old it is an email address I have not had in 10 years, and I have never figured out how to get it to let me start over with the iTunes login. I have been using my iPhone since the original model, which I have. It can be wonderful 99% of the time, but every so often it works hard at driving me nuts. Like every computer ever made, restarting often fixes a lot of weirdness. And as I have said before, iTunes is THE very worst program ever written. Just horrid. It makes no logical sense, but it is pure Apple. I only use it to back up my phone to my computer on a regular basis. I have several videos I have generated from old home movies. I would like to have them on my phone to show them to family if I want. Apple seems convinced they are not allowed to let me do that. I used to have lots of videos on my phone but the newer iOS made them go away, they are still on my computer, I tell iTunes to sync them to the phone but like Bigfoot, they are invisible on the phone. |
Thanks all, she is now deleting all the apps she doesn't want or use.
The iPad is new, same size as the old one. She said she checked the memory and it wasn't full. We'll get to the bottom of this one way or another. I'm using her old old one to text with now days. I may give it a tuneup based on what I'm reading here and I'll try deleting some of the unused apps on it too. Thanks again for the help. |
If make an you go to an Apple store, they will fix it for free in a few minutes.

When this new one arrives today, I'm going to fully charge it, without using it, then allow her to try using it without downloading any of the stuff from her old one. I figure if it works, then it must be something with the downloading that caused the problem. I'll take it to the Apple store myself if it doesn't work once we download all the stuff off her old one. The first new one will be returned to Amazon once she's got a working new one in hand. |
From my experience, unless you need parts, the Apple Store will quickly fix it on the spot for free regardless of where you bought it or warranty status...and you can make an appointment, so you don't have to wait.

Did you call Apple Care? They are great and since it is new, it is covered. They will walk you through fixing it.

So, just to update this thread and report what happened.
We ordered another new one, got it and proceeded to charge it first thing. Once charged up I started to set it up and next thing I know it's telling me it'll work just like her old one and all her content is there. Since I don't use it I handed it to her and asked her to check it out. Sure enough, all her 'stuff' was there except her passwords for different accounts. She was OK with that as we've been going thru and trying to get things straight on a number of different accounts so she was gladly signing in and starting from scratch on some of those. The newest one hasn't shut off once on her. The only thing she hasn't gotten 'new' is an Etsy account and Instagram. She didn't recall ever having an Instagram account so that's OK that it's not there. It seems others are complaining about Etsy so she's holding off on getting that updated. So, basically all's well. I wiped the first new one and put it in its box and mailed it back to Amazon just this afternoon. I'd like to thank all of you who chimed in on this. Maybe I'll be able to save the old one if I can get the plug out of the charge port. I think I need some dental tools to do it though. Dang thing broke off flush with nothing sticking out. |
Maybe carefully use super glue….something small that you can use a small drop of the glue on the tip and make contact with the broken bit and then pull it out without getting glue on the important stuff. Use high power magnifying glasses
