diesel Jeep Wrangler

Took a used '22 3.0 TD (ecodiesel) Willys Wrangler unlimited 8 speed automatic (sheesh) for a test drive over the weekend. When cold, sluggish in performance would be putting it kindly. However, once up to temp, it performed well and was without squeeks or rattles and seemed remarkably rigid. I'm sure the rollcage helps tremendously there. Some overhead wind noise at highway speeds and the (defeatable) auto stop/start would get tiresome for me but I was more impressed than disappointed and understand that short trips are not the place for a diesel.

Not sure it's the vehicle for me but am wondering if the early teething pains been worked out of this drivetrain? Other experiences related to these things?

Count me as intrigued. A diesel SUV has been on my Christmas list for years. Now I need to look these up.

The 3.0 ecodiesel isn’t new to Chrysler. I’d go here for insights on the current gen motor

https://www.ram1500diesel.com/forums/ram-1500-ecodiesel-3rd-gen-general-discussion.99/

And here for insight on the JL platform

https://www.wranglerforum.com/forums/wrangler-jl.1498/

My brother has a Gladiator Rubicon which has been fine with the exception of some engine issues that are know with the 3.6 pentastar.

Pretty sure Jeep has already discontinued the diesel, and if so not a good sign.

I had a JL Rubicon with the 3.6 gas and a six speed and in CO at altitude that thing was a dog. So much so that I sold it to Carvana and made serious $ on it when it only had 5,000 miles. Now if they had the V8 one when I got it, I may still have it.

Cannot comment on the diesel as I did not want one due to the short trips.

The new 3.6 with e-torque is much better. Its coupled to an 8 speed automatic with 4:10 gears and the acceleration is great. (Rubicon)

I think it was a combination of the gearing and the manual that did it, was scary slow.

You can’t go wrong with the Wrangler platform on the trail. Went wheeling a couple months ago and even a bone stock, poverty spec JKU managed all the trails fine. He was the only one to get hung up on a rock but that was driver error more than anything else.

I don’t how the manuals do on the trails. I know for towing, you get more capacity with the auto than the manual. I’m thinking that the engineers have given up working on the manuals.

manuals are better for going down hills and autos are better for crawling over big rocks

engineers didn't give up on manuals; too many women and dorks buying cars today

my opinion only

It was solid on the trails, with that being said I have an XP 1000 Polaris Razr that is great on the trails so I didn’t drive the Wrangler on them often.

Thanks. Looks like a fair number of disappointing/frustrating/expensive-to-fix issues with early year engines as well as some attributable to not bringing the engine up to temp for extended time (EGR related intake buildup...). Some electronic gremlins too.

the autos have a feature called hill decent that will maintain a speed when on trail and crawling that acts a bit like a manual.

while looking for a rubicon i drove a couple manual 6 speeds and the shifting was very sloppy, vague feel to it and lots of play. after driving the 1st one i thought it might have just been that particular rig, but the second one was no better. the rubicons have a 4/1 transfer case, the manuals have 4.10 gears and autos have a 3.73. not sure what the base JK's have in regards to TC and final drive gearing. im going to be regearing mine to 4.88 or 5.13's very soon.

i went with an auto after driving the six speeds and having been in a 94YJ manual for the last 6 years or so. the auto is very nice in the rocks and trails. the locked YJ was still very capable and a ton of fun even with a 2.3/1 TC and 4.10 gears.

For some reason the diesel in the Jeep has cooling issues in hot environments. Goes into limp mode very easily in these conditions. I haven’t heard of that being an issue in the Ram which is weird. They have discontinued it and are now pushing the hybrid version as well as the new turbo straight six that will be coming out.

Last week there were more semi's parked in front of my office unloading Jeeps for Jeep Safari then I'd ever seen before. Jeep brought more vehicles of all kinds. They were then hiding them next door in a large warehouse, until the unveiling.

Lot's of concept vehicles.

Of course I was partial to the 392 Hemi in firecracker red.... Which could be yours for $100,000

Probably a Wrangler Anniversary edition in the mix too.

They really nailed the look with this one from a couple years ago
