This and diving, you have to take a buddy along.

This was big news here locally. I'm just a couple hours drive south of where this happened. This guy is very, very lucky to be alive.

I'm no skier, no snowboarder, but have done more than my fair share of back country snow shoeing. A lot of it on Mt. Baker which, when I was younger, I "summited" several times. Which, admittedly, isn't all that big of a deal, it being one of the (relatively) "easiest" of our local peaks on which one can do that (Rainier is a lot harder, and requires a guide). But I digress...

Anyway, I've dug several friends out of these "snow wells" (I've never actually heard them called that, but that's a good description), and have been dug out of a few myself. They are nothing to trifle with, that's for darn sure. Again, one lucky guy.

When snowshoeing I keep my distance from trees, if possible.

I see various diving in stupid places videos. They freak me wayyyy out from the claustrophobia and disorientation risk - perhaps leading to certain death.

This is the same risk on a sunny day outside.

Another "F**k that noise" added to my list of never.

I could not imagine the feeling hanging upside-down thinking this is how it ends.
