Doubt if this is a coincidence.

This morning I was listening to a podcast on my iPhone wherein the main subject is Sandra Locke. Lots of talk about Clint, just because they were such an item back in the day.

Checking emails and YouTube just now, I see that here we have a video about Clint Eastwood, discussing his Dirty Harry character. I've never had a Clint Eastwood video show up in my YouTube feed, or if I had, it's a 'movie shorts' kind of thing, not a sit down interview with him discussing some aspect of his life.

You darn kids need to get offa my lawn. >shakes fist<

When I look something up on DuckDuckgo my wife gets a bunch of ads on youtube and Facebook about whatever I was looking up. A couple of days ago I planned to look up Grillgrates for my granddaughter's birthday and couldn't remember if I had searched and ordered them. My wife said yes I had, and she knows because she got Grill Grates ads on her Facebook feed.

Turn off the microphone for apps in settings.

Can you spell that out a bit more? Looked around a bit but saw nothing like that.

One device at your location receives content. If another device at that location becomes active, is it surprising it is offered related content?

What are you using .... PC, phone, etc.?

I've always kept both cameras covered and only allow access to the microphone to a couple of things ... my phone being one :).

I'm not paranoid ... but I ain't in de Nile either :(.

Go to settings, open the Facebook app. You’ll see reference to a microphone. Turn it off.

Repeat as necessary.

Not all applications will ask for access to your microphone or your camera, or whatever. Some do, some don’t.

KFC911 04-15-2023 11:08 AM

By default, I don't allow doodly .... then enable for the 2 or 3 things that need access... but I'm on a 'droid.

It ain't Big Brother, it's Big Business. Your browsing habits are worth money to someone. All hail the buck.

Google scares me. I had a Google drive for a while, then cancelled it. But the photos on the Google drive app on my local drive were still there and still counted as part of my total storage. (I only know that because they stopped letting me use gmail because my "storage was full."
Fine, said I. I moved the entire Google drive folder off my hard drive into the trash and deleted the trash. My total storage amount didn't change and I still couldn't use my email.
As it turns out, Google still had all my por... - art photos on their server and I had to go through some rigamarole to get them deleted.

"You don't want Google drive? Fine. We've got your stuff and you can't get it back. You can't even delete it. Because we are Google."

THat means you likely have other active trackers in your browser, some extention or ad tracker - because DDG shouldn't do that.

KFC911 04-16-2023 06:11 AM

^^^^ Yep .... I use the Duck, and not much else.

The only time I connect to Google servers is when I access PPOT :(

... unless it has changed in recent years.

Ever read the Terms of Use/Privacy Policy of Facebook?
The incredibly lengthy Privacy policy could be summed up with "You ain't got none".

^^^ There is virtually no aspect of our modern lives that your info and habits are not shared imo. As as someone posted .... it's not the gov. ..... just bu$ine$$ as usual.

Paul T 04-16-2023 06:46 AM

It's most definitely not a coincidence, and not using Google doesn't really address the problem either. Just about every single app has some ad library API built into it - you are being tracked and monitored in numerous ways if you have a smart phone, it's just a fact of modern life. No way around it besides going back to an old school flip phone.

I noticed this a few years ago. My wife and others thought I was imagining it.

They don’t think that any more!

Countless times we’ve discussed a subject (just talked about it, not googled it or anything else), then very shortly after ads on that exact subject start popping up on my devices. It’s so specific and so quick, no one denies it now.

One (to me) crazy example. My wife and I were discussing a local hospital, I said it has an ok but not great heart clinic. Later that day an ad from that hospital popped up on my iPad, the ad said how great their heart program is.

And, I have all microphones (that I can find) turned off. I’ve done my best, but there’s so many listening programs and devices (phones, computers, iPads, TVs etc) it’s a losing battle.

When you google something, yes I totally get that it’s tracked and you’re going to get specific ads etc. But I’m talking about instances where the subject was only discussed in a conversation.

This is common on my wife's phone, but not mine. I uninstalled the facebook app.

Whenever I have to get a new phone, the first thing I do is spend an hour or so deleting, uninstalling, and turning off permissions.

Same here... though I rarely get a new phone, I reset it "back to factory" on occassion and then do as you do... uninstalling, deleting, and disabling stuff ... and I never install apps, allow upgrades, or do any cloud stuff.

Nada ..... and I like it that way :)
