She wants a free 2nd seat but I have to pay extra for bags over a certain weight...

Doctor, heal thyself.

Charging someone extra becauae they weigh a LOT is just wrong imo. Some folks are really dense ....

Now charging extra based on volume is a 'nuther matter :D!

fintstone 04-15-2023 09:03 AM

It seems to me that if they want two seats...they should just buy two seats. We would all like more room/two seats when we fly...and can get it if willing to pay the price.

Time for a diet if you are too fat to fit in an airline seat.

Nicely done.

Charge by the girth? (leave it! )

Those 1st class seats accommodate.

The problem with that is the airline will likely sell it to a standby.

Yes, I had that happen to me last year on a flight from DTW to FLL. I was in the window seat and a man sat down in the aisle seat. He said..."At least we will have plenty of room...the middle seat is sold to my wife and she had a last minute deal and couldn't make it."

Just before they shut the door...an almost 300 pounder crammed himself in...flying standby.

The airlines make out good on selling one seat to 2.5 people.:)

island911 04-15-2023 09:32 AM

Ha! Exactly ^

I will note that I spring for the extra comfort seats - which gives just a bit more legroom.

I loath flying Alaska Air for more than a couple hours due to their cramped 737 fleet, with 3&3.

IMO, they should put some fat 2&2 in coach, with an upcharge.

LEAKYSEALS951 04-15-2023 09:34 AM

Simple.

At the gate, before boarding, in front of everyone, have random passengers undergo hydrostatic weighing.

If I identify as fat and wide, then you guys need to pick up the tab for the extra seat! It’s only fair!

If you are average size or just slightly larger and fit into the seat you pay for that seat . If you are plus plus size and don't fit into one seat guess what . You buy two seats or go in the cargo hold . Take a bus . Or drive . Or take a bike because you need the exercise !!! I am NOT paying for your fat a$$ ! 😡

Like most everyone, I hate the cattle car experience of modern airline flights. On my last flight, I was seated on every leg next to men that were all reasonably fit, but just large and tall, with shoulders like a lineman. I always get an aisle seat, so I can at least stretch out one leg. I had my shoulder pressing against some other man on every leg unless I bent over sideways into the aisle. It was miserable.

True...and it was worth it. Babies need their milk.:)

I was also on another flight years earlier, seated next to a young gal (not Hooters worth) and she had a 3 or 4 year old in the seat between us. We were half-way through the flight when the mother suddenly went into convulsions. I pressed the overhead button and yelled because the FA's were not appearing. The young child was so scared that she slid off her seat and crawled under the seat in front of me.

Finally a man from the back came up and told the FA that he was a Dr. and got her through the episode. First responders boarded the plane when we landed to help her out.

FWIW, seat width varies greatly between planes and airlines.

Economy seats on an Alaska 737 is 17" wide. On a Hawaiian A330 it's 18" wide. On a Hainan Airlines A330 it's 19" wide.

Alaska is ridiculous. I pony up for first clas when the wife and I go visit our kids in Fairbanks. Money well spent.
