The family dogs who mauled two Tennessee toddlers to death Wednesday and left their mother with severe injuries had never been aggressive, a friend told Fox News Digital.

Kirstie Jane Bennard, 30, was seriously wounded when she tried to pull the family's two pit bulls off 5-month-old Hollace Dean and 2-year-old Lilly Jane at their home in rural Shelby County outside Memphis.

"I can promise you those children were her world, and if there was any inkling of danger, she would have never had those dogs near her kids," the shattered mom's best friend, Kelsey Canfield, told Fox News Digital.

The family had the pets, Cheech and Mia, for more than eight years without a violent incident, Canfield said.

Oh gee, what a surprise! PIT BULLS again.

If you read the story this is not bad training (excuse #1 down the drain) or dogs that showed problems in the past (excuse #2 gone bye-bye) or gansters (3 strikes on excuses-you're out). Just Pit Bulls that out of no where kill two children.

But but they are such loving animals.

One does not often see toddlers mauled to death by Chihuahuas. Lesson learned? Never have a pet that can easily kill you and your family...much less two of them.

It should be illegal to own them without a license, and a multi-million dollar insurance policy. You can't just own a wolf or a lion, and you shouldn't just be able to own a pitbull. I was attacked by two when in working a summer job in college. Lucky to escape without injury, and was able to inflict damage to them, before me and my work partner were harmed. My neighbor had one that they got as a puppy, and after about 5 years of ownership, while walking it she slipped on the ice. Dog got startled and just about killed the lady. Her husband had to beat the thing with a 2x4 to get it to let go of the lady. These are ticking time bombs that need to be put down. I don't trust any of them!

I've been around 17 PBs/mixes.... they had NO idea what their kid brought into their lives.... a cute 8 week old puppy. I loved all of those dawgs, but I digress.....

They are fine until they aren't and the consequences can be horrific. Ticking time bombs for some of them.... If you've never encountered them in a dog fight within their own pack..... then you have no idea what I'm talking about.

And it was NOT improper upbringing .... all 17, I knew as weeks old pups.

My family raised english mastiffs - sweet dogs, but also up to roughly 180 lbs of muscle that were once used to hunt deer and allegedly went head-to-head in the Colosseum with the big monster cats.

Nope. Just nope. Plus, they're sort of sickly and even if healthy they seem to die young.

Standard poodles for us. I can hopefully (maybe?) hold my own against 65 lbs of fluff and nail polish.

The problem with toddlers and pets is that toddlers often look at pets as if they're stuffed animals...people should wait until children are older before getting pets..and then not pit bulls.

My wife has a "purse dog" that we are more worried the grandkids will hurt than the other way around. If you want kids/grandkids, you have to make sacrifices.

I always had fairly large dogs (hounds) growing up and never a problem. If for some reason, I had to have a Pit (can't imagine what it would be) ...I would always be armed with a 45 or similar...and they would never be around wife/kids.

Years ago, a family bought the house next to mine. I was happy to see that it was a police officer, but he quickly ghettoed up the place by not following any neighborhood covenants. I mentioned a couple to him and he told me that they would never enforce them against him (as he was a police officer). Rules simply did not apply. They who had two pit-mix dogs. A couple times they got loose and actually chased scared neighbors into our home for safety. I was afraid for my kids (and others) walking home from the nearby school.

These dogs would actually leap up to the top of the (about 5' high) fence and try to grab you when you passed close by (they could get their heads well over onto our side. Once when avoiding a leap, I jumped back and tore my arm open badly in several places on a large rose bush (bled like crazy).

I confronted the fat donut cop (worked in a police lab of some sort I think) and told him that he had better do something (raise the fence or get rid of the dogs). I told him that if they came across into my yard or hurt one of my family again (showed him my bleeding arm from the rose bush), I would put them down on the spot. He gave me the usual "they are gentle and never hurt anyone" bit. When I did not buy that, the tub of lard got all tough on me and told me that he was a policeman, and he could do as he pleased. I was angry enough that I told him that I would not hesitate to put down his dogs and "beat him like a rug" as well if they ever hurt anyone, got out again, or came over my fence (and would be happy to do so on the spot). He told me that I would go to jail and I said: "let's find out". He looked like he was about to soil himself and he told me that he knew judges that would take his side. I said "let's find out" again and told him that he would probably lose his job/pension in addition to his dogs (and still get his butt whoopin').

He declined to "find out" and soon got rid of the dogs.

I personally think anyone that owns a dog and it attacks and kills another person they need to be held criminally responsible . And the dog put down . And I am a dog person and have been my entire life .

In this particular case yes the parents will be in pain the rest of their lives knowing their pets killed their children . But I don't think that is punishment enough. . Your stupidity led to the deaths of your children. There are no excuses , you failed as a parent .

It seems to be luck of the draw for lack of any other description. My neighbors of 20 years have always had pit bulls and none of them have ever been aggressive. However, I've never let my kids be alone with any of them.
