you a coffee snob?
i was a Folgers, Uban, whatever was the cheapest pound at the grocery. then i became a coffee snob after trying this.. https://www.mlcrc.com/?fbclid=IwAR2Udb4ji1WTPOpgJ47LJWCW-KDcxg7mIl1VcNUv8Umdl_YyWbZp8VXpCVs
I do know the guy who roasts and ship every bean. he is a better dude than his coffee... revered from yosemite to truckee. be a coffee snob and try Drew's brews. |
There used to be a roastery in Oakhurst; Yosemite Coffee & Roasting Company. Their mountain man blend was glorious. I have yet to find anything that compares to that.
|
My coffee machine is fussy - it's the snob. And will only make excellent coffee with one brand of coffee. Friends buy me something exotic as a treat but it doesn't work in my Vibiemme.
|
I have preferences but not exactly a snob. I prefer espresso to coffee, and I prefer strong coffee to weak. I prefer espresso made from dark roasted beans to light or medium. That last is not so much the beans as the machines. Most espresso machines are not designed to pull a good shot from light beans, and those that can are often not used that way by busy baristas. The reason I don’t think I’m a snob, exactly, is that these preferences don’t lead me to buy expensive beans.

In the past, I have ordered green beans in bulk and roasted my own, but not a snob .... I just like freshly roasted (no more than a few weeks ago), dark beans and I'm good. Off the shelf I go with Peets Major Dickasons ... but a local (awesome) BBQ joint has been roasting in a small room next to the entrance .... I can get freshly roasted Dark Sumatra that is excellent ... and it's an excuse to get some BBQ too!
Yer guy won't let me order BBQ ... or coffee ;) |
I roast my own, so guess so. Also b/c I'm cheap-12 oz of good roasted coffee is 16 bucks or so, a whole pound of green is 6...
|
Nope.
Coffee, black. At home just Folgers. Straight up at any breakfast place we happen to eat at. I have never even tried coffee with milk or sugar in it, and that just sounds gross. I remember going to Portland in 2006 and the coffee served at the Hospitality room had a supply of paper cups next to it. I poured a cup and had to fight doing a spit take, horrible burned nasty taste, and I walked to the trash can and added my mostly full cup to the many other full cups of nasty Starbucks coffee. I had to drive over to the Burger King to get some decent coffee. I figured it was just a bad coffee pot, so at the Concours, I tried another cup. Since I was outdoors I did actually spit it out, and poured it out and never want Charbucks again. I have had coffee at friends houses and some have some African or Hawaiian coffee. Meh. My business partner has some elaborate polished copper espresso machine. It is a real process for him to make coffee for himself. |
Sort of.
I drink the free brown liquid at work they call coffee because I'm cheap. At home on the weekend or off-work days, I weigh and grind my beans, measure water weight and TDS. My favorite beans are from Kean Coffee, a second generation roaster (Martin Dietrich) who really knows his stuff. Its where I discovered that coffee could be amazing. |

I use a Clever Coffee dripper - great and simple device. https://www.sweetmarias.com/clever-coffee-dripper-with-filters.html |
IMO freshly roasted coffee is like bread ... it's at it's peak a day after roasting and needs to be consumed within 2-3 weeks. I check the "roasted on" dates for everything .... including the BBQ joint's coffee :). Fresh, oily, dark beans .... from Columbia, Sumatra, Yemen ..... no high $$$ hoity-toity beans from Jamaica, Hawaii, or pooped outta a ferret's butt for me :D.
Some roaster's around here sell coffee that's already old and stale.... And Starsux does indeed :(. I've had in once ... visiting a friend in Hermosa Beach decades ago .... from a drive-thru ... $4 for a cup-o-crap .... poor girl ... bless her heart ;) |
Yes and no.
I make 2-3 shots of espresso every morning. Waiting for the heat to come up as I type. I have tried many beans and roasters. Some of which are simply amazing. But, they are really inconsistent. And, I waste far too much to get the shot dialed. What do I do? Buy some beans from Costco that are very consistent. My pours are better with inferior beans. |
Not a snob but like the vast majority of people I insist on something that is good.
Few things are worse than a watery weak cup o Joe. Starbucks, I don't get the fascination, the stuff is just unpleasant, every time I tried it it was just bitter and tasted burnt. |
Keurig with donut shop medium roast pods.

So, I was going to create a thread concerning a coffee issue that recently arose; I've been buying Peet's beans for years. I buy a week's worth (1/2#) and have them grind it - one less device taking up the limited counter real estate - and keep that in a sealed container. By the end of the week it is, nose-wise, fairly clear that the grounds have passed peak.
Last week I went to get a half pound and was told that they only sell 1 pound bags because they come sealed that way! So, apparently they dont supply their own stores with the 5 pound bags, and have increased their packaging waste stream. I guess no more Peet's for me. And as noted above, definitely no Starsux; those beans are crap. Sadly, Philz also isnt selling beans either, because their roastery was damaged... Ugh. I waded through all the local roasters in my general area and if you want to swallow 12 oz at $20 to $30 a bag, you're golden. So, I guess I'm a snob.... |
I could be wrong, but think it's Costco "french roast" whole beans that Cindy buys. Runs them through a little noisy grinder before making a pot in our Cuisinart drip maker. We both prefer black coffee.
Tried Starbucks once when out & about...didn't like it. A local mexican restaurant has a coffee I like. I asked the waiter, he said it was "Farmer Brothers", but evidently they only service restaurants.. |
No, but I don't like bad coffee. Starbucks is not great, burnt usually
|
The local BBQ joint reduced their bag size from 1 lb down to 12 oz a year or so back ... it's $11 I think .... and perfect freshly roasted Sumatra :)!
I gotsta have good coffee .... I'd go back to roasting my own beans if not for them. It's just a small sideline for "the owner" .... a hobby methinks .... |
We really like Philz coffee and buy a couple of bags at a time. SBUX coffee sucks and Peet’s coffee gives me the shakes plus aggravates my reflux. Philz doesn’t seem to do that and it tastes bold but pleasant. I might give your buddy’s beans a try. That sounds weird.
|
I became a coffee snob when a local roster made me a cappuccino that tasted as good as coffee smells.
Nothing was even close to that prior. One key pointer he gave was to not buy burnt/over-roasted beans (like in the OP link) |
I'm not a big Starbucks fan but I like dark roasted coffee. The popularity of Starbucks upped the coffee quality in just about every restaurant and vending machines.
Peets is my go-to but I like Nicholas coffee from Pittsburg, coffee from Puerto Rico and Turkish type coffee from the middle east. |
