I also wondered about that...when buying new tires, I purposely requested the shortest possible valve stems for just that reason. Actually tho, I decided to pass because of the theft factor.

I remember back when those simple chrome nut valve caps came out back in the 80s. You couldn't keep them on your car for two days without them being absconded.

I heard that's why the old Fuchs had these supports.

I suspect it has to do with the angle of the valve stem, build of the wheel, speed of the vehicle, etc...
