Best female vocalist dead or alive?
Karen Carpenter gets my vote but I’m old. Who gets your vote?

Why not title the thread "Favorite female vocalist dead or alive?" There are way too many amazing unique female singers to think of one as "the best."
Plus, it might technically fall to an opera singer for that. ![]() Gladys Knight, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Joan Osbourne, Sade, Jennifer Warnes, Janis Joplin, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Nicks, and Grace Slick are some of my favorites... for different reasons.

Linda Ronstadt
Nina Simone Lisa Stansfield Adele Mariah Carey was amazing when she was starting out, but I think she wasted her talent.

This is just a favorite thread, best you can do for best is best in a particular genre.
Anyway, Kate Bush, Whitney Houston. Billie Holiday, Celine Dion, Pat Benatar, Sarah McLachlan all come quickly to mind.

Ella Fitzgerald had more talent than all the others combined.

I have admired many female singers, most of them mentioned above.
For me Joan Baez tops the list. She even made Bob's songs sound good. Best Les

Whitney Houston. I was at a Brazilian Steakhouse in downtown Quincy, MA when I heard the news. Too young.

A few mention here and I would include Annie Lennox. I'm not sure I have a favorite. I think it depends on the type of music. Heel and Toe has a nice list

Let’s add Minnie Riperton to the list.
Saw her at the Cow Palace in South San Francisco likely in the late ‘70s. Unique and amazingly good. |

For me it is more about an emotional response, not just vocal range and power.
Joni Mitchell conveyed more of a certain something, again, for me, than any other female singer. And she wrote most of her stuff...
