Little click bait-y title but a good read.

Wow! Quite the story. I have to think negligence/incompetence was the main cause. I get it, when a Dr sees a Dr, they may think "great, another person that's going to tell me how to do my job," but that doesn't excuse ignoring symptoms/evidence.

I have a surprise for you all..what happened in this mans case IS ALL TOO COMMON...LETS CALL IT, IT IS TO BE EXPECTED just wait and see what happens to you once you have to go in. What insurance you have doesn't matter..it is fked up right across the board..
Then if you really want a reality check go and sit in a ER....people will get checked in, and then go sit in the lobby waiting for 8 or 9 hours in severe distress or pain before they are finally attended to.. that goes on all day, everyday...Insurance or not it doesn't matter.. When you call your MD's office the first thing the robot says is if this is an emergency call 911 or go to the ER.... Just pray to God that you do not get sick... Everybody I know who has needed care has had a BAD EXPERIENCE with the care they have received..two have died.. one directly the other a result of the protracted and convoluted referral process...

We trusts titles too much. The guy was ultimately willing to settle and die instead of being discriminated against for self avocation (difficult patient). The fact he is bleeding out and is offered benzo is more shocking. I don't think this is ego but a trend of health care providers for incompetence(refusing to look at the blood loss and only focus on theory)...
My ex's father went to the er for a chest pain. Elevated enzymes and was released same day. Died the next day at home. Family is full of pharmD's and blindly trusted the decisions made. |

Not all doctors are incompetent or unsympathetic, but Ms Rocket is a doctor of nursing, with 40+ years of ICU experience. She sees the spectrum of doctors, and in many cases, the doctors ask her what needs to be done.
Edit. She’s amazed that people, patients, other nurses, etc. defer to everything the doctor says. Nurses will get out of the chair for the doctor to sit down. She doesn’t play that game. |

Back to the story: I read that earlier. Personally, I'm not sure I would have a procedure (and a colonoscopy is a procedure) done by a doctor on their last day. They have no incentive to give you the best care. They are never going to see you again. And if something does go wrong, who do you call? Who do you set up an appt with?

Half of all doctors graduated in the bottom half of their class.
At the same time, we really only hear about the outliers. You never hear about the thousands of patients that have procedures every day that have a good outcome. Is the profession perfect? Far from it. But at least in my experience- of 40+ years- I have never personally seen a case as reported above. (And I was on the medical complaint/review committee for years at our hospital.) But I will say, it seems things are getting a little worse. gary |

I think it's a little bit more critical when human lives are on the line. In the CCP if you do not like the treatment by your doctor they are often beaten by the patients. Here one is labelled as drug seeking and pushed off as malingering. It's happened to the guy who wrote the essay and it's happened to myself (albeit while not a life and death situation). |

It happened to my neighbor's son.
Botched colectomy, a few days of ignoring his mother and "just give him more antibiotics" turned into her going over his head to Mayo's rapid response team, moved to the ICU, an induced coma, almost 5 months in the hospital, and he's never going to be the same again. You're never going to see this in the news. On a lighter note, my doc can't do math. My racing physical requires a resting pulse rate, then checked after vigorous exercise, then again after 2 minutes of rest. Either I'm the fittest guy on the planet, and have a pulse rate of 72 after the exercise, and 64 2 minutes after that, or she can't multiply. Took it myself when I got home, got my heart rate into the 120s doing the same then, then settled into the 80s or 90s 2 minutes later. |

I've been watching the House t.v. series again.
The main theme to the show is "Treat for something very exotic" or "Recreate scenario until patient dies and resuscitate to find cause". Also, do lots of drugs and break into patient's homes. Experienced nurses are very under-rated.

I think I was born about 75 years too late. My attitude is out of step with how "modern medicine" is practiced.

I suspect there's no shortage of doctors who, upon having a patient explain their symptoms, do what that patient did before scheduling the appointment.
