Looking forward to this. I thought the first one did justice to the books.

Steve Carlton 05-03-2023 09:53 AM

Looks good. I think they spiced it up.

jyl 05-03-2023 10:31 AM

I'm absolutely going to see this!

stevej37 05-03-2023 10:36 AM

The only one I've seen was the mid/late 80's one.
I'm still trying to figure that one out.

My wife will be thrilled!

She reads Dune annually and occasionally reads the other books (she owns them all).

I took her to Dune 1 on our anniversary. Pre-bought seats dead center in the theatre. After the movie my wife said, "that was our best anniversary ever!"

She does tend to exaggerate and use best ever a lot, so I'm not counting it as a huge win :)

varmint 05-03-2023 11:39 AM

i seem alone in preferring the 80's david lynch glorious train wreck. the new one was grindingly slow, meh design, bored looking actors and without a single real action scene.

cantdrv55 05-03-2023 01:22 PM

I saw a YouTube about Dune movies vs the book and it says the new Dunes are the closest to books. I’m a fan even though I really dislike Zendaya.

cockerpunk 05-03-2023 01:25 PM

lets just face facts, dune is not a very good story, and makes for a poor movie in general.

the first one felt like it was fan fiction of dune. im just so tired of slow pan *bwaahhhhhhhh* movies.

the first one would have made a better art gallery than a movie. i expect the second will too.

jyl 05-03-2023 03:49 PM

One thing I liked in Part 1 was the casting of Timothee Chalamet. He seems like what Paul Atriedes would be: brought up under a microscope, both closely sheltered and rigorously trained, grown up watching every word and motion and never showing his genuine reaction, with almost no-one to trust or be relaxed with, separated from general society by his status and the constant threat of assasination, an inward person with a practiced outward face, a slight young man, easily under-estimated in the shadow of his dynamic father and other-worldly mother. The Harkonnen and the Fremen thought little of him, until they learned better.

The performance of Lady Jessica in Part 1 was bad. They made her act like any other people, emotional and vulnerable. In reality, she was the most dangerous person in any room, and always held herself under rigid control, a skill she taught Paul.

sc_rufctr 05-03-2023 04:10 PM

Wow... Breath taking & I loved the first movie. :)

Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Léa Seydoux and Florence Pugh... WOWSERS :D

Is The Flash more your style?

stevej37 05-03-2023 04:24 PM

I consider this one the first Dune movie...is that right?
Which would make the OP...Movie 2...part 2?

The 80's movie was an unneeded comedy but it seemed to paint a decent picture of the book series.
The newest ones are blank white canvasses in 4k: Zero character development, although the brief action sequences were decent.
People need to read the books to understand the movies, or they need to be 8hrs long.

sc_rufctr 05-04-2023 06:31 AM

IME Young people in general don't read books.

is that a marvel movie? if so, then no, i have not seen a marvel movie in 10 years.

the last science fiction i really liked was arrival, such a good story, makes me cry every time. the Martian was a fun popcorn movie. district 9 was great. children of men was great.

there is lots of good scifi being made now, and dune, just does not hold up.

YA is the fastest growing segment of book sales currently.

if you are looking for the cutting edge, id recommend the locked tomb series. Gideon the ninth is a masterpiece:

We actually rewatched that one for ****s and giggles last year.

It was as bad as I remembered.

fisher22 05-04-2023 04:59 PM

Can't wait for Part 2. Criticism will surely follow from those true to the original disaster, but the new one is much more in line with what current audiences expect. Good or bad.

Do you know what IME means?

otto_kretschmer 05-04-2023 11:02 PM

I like the 80s Dune and its still worth watching even though it is a bit of a trainwreck. I saw the new Dune when it came out a couple years ago and it was OK but I left a little disappointed. I'll see the 2nd movie when it comes out.

Hollywood has been making rubbish for the last couple decades. I still have a little hope they will make Ringworld into a film but they are so stuck on sequals and even when they get a goldmine like the Star Wars universe they manage to ruin it.

Holy hell that looks good to me. I am hoping a twelve hour directors cut is released so i can see more of that gorgeous photography. More blowing sand and color. I dont like much but i loved dune 1. Whatever theyre doing with the camera just hyptonizes me.

Dune 2 looks even better. I cant remember the last time i cared that a movie was coming.

That lynch 80s thing… its cool, its whacked, but its not really dune. Reminds me of the dreams i have when i drink red wine at altitude.

Wetwork 05-05-2023 06:18 AM

I think its simply impossible to crank out a "true to the book" film of Dune. Unless you've read the books you just can't possbly understand the deep details. To me its just like a Porsche. Its looks great, drives fantasic, but once you open the hood you realize the engineers or author have crammed so much stuff in the in there it will take forever to understand. Its like someone said there's some free space so put some more nuts and bolts in there just because. I read Dune pretty annually as well as Starship Troopers just to get my Scify fix.-WW

its almost like your experience is not the defining one for reality.

funny, i always thought Porsches were pretty wrecking grade engineering at the end of the day.

I always thought that was a good thing about them.

matthewb0051 05-05-2023 07:59 AM

Florence Pugh
Rebecca Ferguson
Zendaya

What's not to like?

Ok. Just watched 1/2 of dune 1 again last night with wife. Holy crap is that a good adaptation. I admit im a huge frank herbert fan but the movie isnt exactly dune its actually better in many ways.

Wife hasnt read the book so theres subtle stuff that she misses. That gorgeous red dress that jessica wears off the spaceship, chains on her face, its her official outfit as concubine. The scene when the housekeeper presents jessica with the knife:

The book explains that jessica was going to mumble something poetic to perpetuate the fiction of a new messiah, but she said ‘its a maker…’ (fremen name for the worm) and the housekeeper screams with excitement, was luck that she said words that the housekeeper took the right way. Jessica immediately realizes her fortube and rolls with it - seeking allies. In the movie its 5 seconds and easy to miss. So cool and so well done.

The story isnt about some entitled kid that needs to eat some pork chops, it is about the disaster of a myth’s rise to power.

Uh.. and that beautiful scene where the sardaukar receive their blessing in the rain, the blood sacrifices chained upside down to the pyramids and the throat singing? What was that? Not in book but totally Awesome.

Ill stop ranting but i think i cant empathize with people that dont like that movie. If you dont like it watch it more. Beatings will continue until morale improves.

sc_rufctr 05-14-2023 12:23 AM

I keep re-watching the trailer... 😉
