Has anyone driven the new 400Z?
I have yet to lay eyes on one. Dang tempting.

I’ve been tempted as well. There have been significant issues getting these to dealers. Haven’t seen one in person.
I’ve watched all the videos on YouTube. I love 80% of what I see but some style issues don’t agree with me…same as the Supra I would be very interested in the automatic version. |

I saw one on the road last week. Actually paced alongside/near it in 45-70mph traffic for about 15 minutes. Had Mich manufacturer plates, but it was here in Az.
Looked really great. I like the rear angles and the tail lights. Of course it is a new design/body style, I felt a tug of my 260Z days. The straight and level-ish horizontal line across the top of the lights was the first thing I noticed. Probably just nostalgia on my part, but the car looked great. Maybe it's just a tad smaller. It sounded good, too. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1683470083.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1683470107.jpg |

If you've got to buy a car before it's there because they are that "hot" then you're also going to get bent over on price. I'll wait until they are more readily accessible. Eventually, almost everything hot returns to normal. Miatas, S2k, etc... started out being sold for well over list, but eventually you could buy them for less than list. I don't have to be the first guy on my block that's got the new hotness. |
I remember many years ago when the 350Z was fairly new. Leland Pate got one and had nothing but problems and got rid of it.
And here on the board, I've heard lots of chatter about Nissan not being made to the same level as Toyota and Honda (not reliable, etc...). THere was a guy in our old apt complex probably 4-6 years ago that had a modified Nismo (not sure if it was a 350 or 370) that was REALLY something. The back end pic posted above looks decent. |
Watched a bunch of reviews since I posted this last night, not all glowing. New engine, new styling, but some of the limitations from the 370 persist.

Good thinking. When the '08 Bullitt came out, dealers were getting $3-5K above sticker. I bought my '09 in April of '09 for $3k less than sticker. They're still not entering the collector car realm, but seem to be retaining most of their value (nominally...not factoring inflation) for nice ones. Much more than a similar condition GT Mustang. Dealerships have every right to ask and get additional markup. We have the right to not pay it. (edit) If this Z has about the same cockpit space as recent models, no need for me to look...simply not enough leg room. |
I would love the 4 cyl Supra. But I can’t get over all the fake air vents and I’m not interesting in trying to make them all functional.
In do prefer the new Z interior but the back up camera is crap. Not a big deal but there are enough small reasons on just about every new car I am interested in to make me slow down and wait especially in todays market It’s still kind of hard to justify either the Supra or Z when 718 used prices should start coming down soon. Ide rather just have a base cayman with pdk over either the Z or Supra. As an 80s kid I should be more interested than I am. I think I’m just curious to have something different. I’ve never owned a Japanese car The z does speak to me in automatic form though. Seems like a very fast and comfortable road trip GT car but so is a cayman There’s a lot of great pov vids for the z but this one really got me interested in the auto <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Q6CJP6bOr7w" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Topher didn’t like the auto so much
I wish the z came with the supra’s auto trans. It’s pretty hard finding the perfect car. Porsche gets the closest I think <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SgNJQDrB9QI" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
The looks are way better than the 350 or 370z thats for sure. But its really hard for me to get excited about anything modern with all the fakeness and nannies going on. I had a 89 240sx coupe for my first car and it was the most fun car iv had. Better than the 911 by a good margin. Just because you could flog it hard and not worry about blowing it up or crashing because it never did anything you couldnt reel in. More power with a sr20 or whatever they do nowadays would be ideal but the stock engine and suspension kept me out of trouble i guess. I always lusted for a 300zx but they were always more expensive than they seemed to be worth. Especially since theyre mostly automatics they seem more of a heavy grand tourer than a nimble backroad basher

I’m not against autos or water cooled and don’t care what others think I bought a mk6 GTI with DSG. Immediately missed the manual so I sold it and bought a mk7.5 manual. Drove off the lot and immediately missed the DSG. Unless the car is a vintage car, I have no interest in manuals these days. My 911 915 manual is the smoothest most satisfying to shift car I’ve owned and fills that need. There is a harmony with the entire system I don’t find in modern cars. Rev hang for example…. |
I really like the way it look from the rear, front, not so much. I saw it at the last Japanese car show in Long Beach. Its a good looking car. Stick or auto, it really doesn't matter to me. If it shifts like PDK, I will consider it but stick will be fine with me too.

I was excited at the prospect but sorta meh in execution I think. You gotta buy the much more expensive version to get the stuff you want, 50k isnt unreasonable but that gets you pretty close to a 6cyl supra or a very lightly used 718 which I think are much more compelling.
Think 400z is more targeted at mustang gt buyer. Also Id rather have the mustang personally. And gr86 is such an awesome (but low power) purist car. I think 400z is a decent car at a time where there are alot of amazing other options. |
Based on looks I like the new Z better, but based on brand it would be a tough call. BMW seems to be like a lotto ticket. Most aregreat but some are complete turds. We havea Nissanand it has made me realizeI dont want another.
