Anyone add Carplay to an older vehicle?
 

New car has carplay, and I'd like to add it to an older truck. Amazon sells screens with various add-ons like backup and traffic cams for $100-150.

Anyone done it?

My 2000 996 has a double din head unit with CarPlay.

My advice is shop for a unit with comfortable (user friendly) controls. Still trying to figure out how to use this unit.

I have a Pioneer unit in my Duramax as well as my 4 runner. All are double din. I like it so much that I put one in my kid's 2000 4runner. Its user friendly and there's no layering to go through to get at a control or change the bass. I opted for the wired Apple Car Play. Thinking about it now, I should have done the wireless. Other then that, most things are done through Blurtooth. Play music with it the only time I need to wire it up is to get the map on the screen on long trips.

I put in a Boss head unit into my 2003 Sequoia. I’m using the original JBL amp and speakers with it. Looks and sounds great BUT there’s an annoying slight hum. I’ve grounded the case to chassis but it’s still there. Turn up the volume is what I do to drown it out. Very inexpensive though and extremely easy to install.

Mine is about three years old. Not sure if the newer ones are better or easier to use. The stereo place suggest it due to its ease of use. There aren't 1000 buttons to change the color of the screen or anything like it which I really like.

I have done it twice.

The Jeep has an Alpine unit that I bought from Crutchfield for about $400. It doesn’t do much but it works well.

I also have one of those cheaper, Android based radios which does everything you can imagine and more but the controls aren’t as car like as in the Alpine. A miss hit of one of the small icons and your in a menu somewhere.

Bought a double din "Dual" refurb for my f350 a couple years back, and have been very happy. Not a fan of the extra large screens, prefer the standard double din format.

If the truck has a single-din you're going to have to use the big screen setup like above. If it's got a double-din size you can easily get a radio that fits in there, cheap.

Here is a photo of an older Pioneer CarPlay unit in my 996. This model has a remote which makes operating the radio easier. It has an option to add a back up camera.

My 996 has a very expensive Alpine double din unit installed by a PO. It is a hunk of do do. Alpine has some built in safety thing that requires engaging the parking brake if you wish to access the settings menu. There is an optical trigger work around but somehow mine has come unhooked or something. So I get to listen to treble only and can't adjust anything. Plus the volume is a couple of buttons. Can't believe someone paid about $1,300 for this thing.

Lots of units out there. First figure out the format that you need and have space for.

You can also check Crutchfield which like has things like which units fit your vehicle as well as installation kits to make the install easier (plug and play, or really close).

I have a Pioneer in my boxster that's also a double din, 7" screen from ~8-9 years ago. It works great, but I'm not sure if the OP will have room for a double din unit.

I love mine. It works well. I've never had any issues with it.

I got no issues with my Pioneer Avic Nex from ~8.5 years ago in my boxster. I don't think it's supposed to play videos unless the car is stopped (sees that the parking brake is set, I think) but I've never tried to watch videos. I don't even use the "HD radio" feature. I use Pandora and Waze and calls and texts via carplay.

One vehicle is a 2012 Honda Pilot. No aftermarket radio will fit. Other is a F350.

I think thats on the installer. I did my own, I have have volume and track control through my steering wheel so I don’t have to use the buttons the head unit. I can change sound settings without the car being in park but I can’t change things like the time.

Crutchfield allows you to filter results on desire for a volume knob.

Well, if your current head unit does not have AUX in you are left with the built in speaker which I'm pretty sure will sound like ass comparatively.

It does have the local FM broadcast option but unless that tech has gotten significantly better in the last 10 years it's also not optimal.

If you get this and the original head unit has a caseette deck you can use that as the AUX in.
